On-the-Go Portability

Good portable juicers keep things simple yet are effective and capable enough to attract different customers. That's pretty much how we would describe the Hamilton Beach 51101.

First things first, the unit's compact design enables on-the-go portability and makes the smallest living spaces suitable enough. Sure, measuring 11.8" x 3.94", this appliance is not necessarily that compact compared to most portable blenders but it is basically microscopic when you put the appliance next to standard blenders.

The weight is also not too bad, not even reaching 2 pounds, meaning you can easily put this thing into most bags/backpacks without even noticing the weight difference. Aesthetics-wise, we've seen more stylish appliances. We're not saying that this compact little machine looks bad, just that its profile is somewhat uninspired compared to some less expensive blenders.

Now, the plastic is rugged and BPA-free, so you don't have to worry about that. But the colors are not really that great except for maybe the white option, that one looks polished and smooth enough to blend into most kitchen spaces.

Easy Sipping

We have nothing against the blender's 175-watt motor though, providing the necessary power to enable fast and reliable performance. You'll have no issues preparing various smoothies, shakes, baby formulas, marinades, and salad dressings.

There are no bells and whistles here. One simple push-button touch will do the trick. Using this ON/PULSE button, the appliance makes smooth, evenly blended drinks, letting you decide the drink's taste and consistency using whatever fruits and veggies you want. The machine's stainless steel blades are no joke, easily able to cut frozen fruits and most seeds within seconds. They're pretty durable and easy to maintain too.

The drinking lid comes equipped with this nice little spout, enabling easy and comfortable sipping. The 14-ounce blending jar doubles as this convenient portable travel cup that you can easily fit into most car drink holders, so you'll never have to lug extra cups/bottles with you anymore. Also, this cup comes equipped with measuring marks, so you'll be able to portion the drinks.

The non-skid feet here are effective enough to protect the surface from scratches. At the same time, the wrap-around cord design will enable quick and easy storage and transportation. The cord is relatively short though (~2 feet), so you'll have to place the appliance next to the outlet.

Bottom line, the Hamilton Beach 51101 is easy to maintain, easy to use, and easy to justify the already affordable price.

More Sophisticated yet as Accessible

Generally speaking, portable blenders are really basic compared to high-end blenders and that's something that we like about them. That said, sometimes, we're missing certain functions and facilities that portable models usually come without.

Sometimes, you can make appliances more sophisticated without making them convoluted. Look at G-TING Personal Blender. From most perspectives, this appliance is not that different from most portable models. Having said that, the base somewhat separates this unit from its peers.

To be more precise, the LED screen that the base comes fitted with, the screen that countertop models usually have and portable models are seldom equipped with. This screen will display when the battery is fully charged and when the charge gets low. It will tell you when there's something stuck to the blades and when you've installed things improperly.

That's nothing groundbreaking and the appliance uses the same one-touch operation with an ON/OFF button, so it is as accessible and simple as most portable blenders. At the same time, the screen is enough to make the machine's portable peers look pretty bland in comparison.

What makes them look bland when compared to this unit is also the unit's smooth and streamlined finish. More often than not, these plastic blenders look pretty poor. This one, on the contrary, appears elegant and polished. It is still the same BPA-free plastic here but the finish makes the housing look more like expensive stainless steel appliances.

No Safety Concerns

People tend to overlook safety mechanisms with blenders and that's not something that we recommend doing. Sometimes, these machines can be surprisingly dangerous. That's not the case here though. You cannot turn this blender on when you are removing the cup from the base, meaning no safety concerns when cleaning the blades.

The six 4D 304 stainless steel blades here are no joke, by the way, easily stirring and mixing the ingredients to achieve the smoothest texture. The blades' no-load rotation speed reaches ~20,000 RPM, so even the toughest seeds will easily crack. Last but not least, the jar comes equipped with this nice little handle that will let you comfortably carry the cup.

In closing, the G-TING Personal Blender is more aesthetically pleasing and sophisticated but no less accessible than most portable blenders, so the appliance is easy to recommend to most customers.

Appliance with Character

The PopBabies P20 is pretty much what portable blenders ought to be and, more often than not, strive to be.

First off, the appliance's design is modern and stylish. Generally speaking, these plastic blenders look cheap but that's not even remotely the case here. No, this little machine looks like high-end appliances. The hexagon patterns etched into the black bottom create this unique profile that adds character to the appliance and also creates this brilliant contrast with the sleek silver button.

Now, you don't have to go with black, there are also Corolina blue, Recipe Princess pink, and white options but the black one elevates the model's appearance much more than those. Though you can easily get tricked here, the appliance's made using the same food-grade, BPA-free plastic that most companies use to build these portable blenders. It's been FDA, CE, and RoHS approved, so you can put various fruits and veggies and drink from this cup without any worries.

Setting aesthetics aside, the appliance measures 10.2" x 3.2", pretty standard as far as these portable models go. The 1.85-pound weight is relatively standard too, nothing especially impressive but nothing to complain about either. What's not so standard about this appliance is the built-in carry handle that will enable comfort transportation and let you easily grab and carry this thing even with wet hands.

Accessories Too

From the operation perspective, the blender's stainless steel blades are strong enough to easily crush frozen fruits, seeds, and ice cubes. The USB port means you won't have to worry about plug issues when visiting different countries. Any USB-enabled device/gadget will be able to recharge the machine's battery. That battery's runtime is pretty low though, so you'll have to be recharging this appliance somewhat more often than most.

Standard ice cubes are too large to comfortably fit inside this thing with multiple fruits and veggies chunks. That's fine. You can use the supplied ice cube tray to make perfect ice cubes and the provided funnel to throw everything including these cubes inside the cup without spilling anything.

There are no convoluted controls here. The aforementioned button enables one-touch operation. There's an LED indicator around this button that tells you when the appliance is done blending.

Long story short, the PopBabies P20 will prove invaluable to people who lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

22,000 RPM

They're called portable blenders but, truth be told, these blenders are usually not quite as portable as the name suggests or as the portable as you want them to be. Of course, there are exceptions to this unwritten rule, and this model from Aoozi makes an excellent exception. Measuring just ~9.5 x 3.6 x 3.5 inches, this device fulfills the 'portable' promise. Plus, the model weighs no more than 1.7 pounds, so you will not feel inconvenienced carrying this one around with you. There's also a nice little wrist strap that will enable comfortable hands-free relocation.

Making the device more portable does not come without its price though. Outputting below 30 watts, this is not the most capable blender, not quite. That being said, the model is also not as meek as you would expect from an output like that. With its sawtooth design, this bad boy can produce 22,000 revolutions per minute, shredding fruits, veggies, and ice like nobody's business. Furthermore, owing to the same sawtooth approach, this portable appliance shreds and mixes fruits without damaging fruit fibers. The blades on these teeth are made from SUS304 stainless steel, so you can blend as much as you want - the blades will not start forming rust patches, showing corrosion signs, or deforming with time.

Double-Click Startup

The model houses an integrated rechargeable battery. Its capacity stretches 4000 mAh, so you'll be able to prepare 20-30 cups without recharging it. Depending on the current, the battery recharges within 3-5 hours, which is not great but also not necessarily terrible. The LED indicator below the one button this device adopts will tell you when the battery's fully charged. What's also not terrible is that this appliance comes packaged with a cleaning brush and a drinking straw.

But, back to the device, its one-touch operation with an On/Off button seems standard initially. Upon further inspection, however, you find out that the model requires a double click to start working, a neat little trick that prevents accidental startups.

Removing these details from the equation, this is a pretty regular package, including its BPA-free plastic construction, 14-ounce capacity, drinking lid with a spout, and measuring marks on its transparent body. So, if you want something that truly delivers on the 'portable' promise, this personal mini blender from Aoozi will not let you down. Also, the model is more affordable than you'd expect.

Between Portable and Stationary

The Homgeek MC-BL818 is this mixture between countertop blenders and portable blenders. Measuring 13.4" x 4.33", this unit is less compact than any portable model we've reviewed above but much more compact than any countertop model we've looked at.

Bringing the entire appliance with you is not something that you'll be doing especially often. The somewhat fat body won't make things too comfortable transportation-wise and the unit works from an AC outlet, so you won't be able to use this appliance anywhere you want.

You will, however, be able to bring the 17-ounce BPA-free Tritan™ cup with you. When you're blending, this cup pulls double-duty as a stationary blending jar, turning into this detachable travel mug when you leave home. Though the cup is pretty massive, you should be able to put this thing into most car cup holders.

The lid comes equipped with this nice little wrist strap that you can use to carry the cup hands-free and the spout will let you take sizable sips/gulps. Some might find the spout pretty large and rather inconvenient but that's entirely subjective. There are also measuring marks on this cup that will let you ration the smoothies/shakes.

Sharp Enough

The cup is nice. What defines this product first and foremost though is the base. First off, the base looks nice, smooth and elegant. The black finish is polished and the company's logo is nuanced enough to make this appliance stand out from most middling blenders. The clean form and purposefully soft lines and curves make this base slick enough to even enrich some spaces. Also, the finish is pleasant to the touch but that's beside the point.

The appliance draws and outputs 300 watts, twice more than most portable blenders and twice less than most countertop models. It will be able to quickly break down most ingredients without destroying these ingredients' nutrients.

The blades are sharp enough to chop, mix, blend, whip, or grind frozen fruits, seeds, and more. Plus, these stainless steel blades are highly resistant against rust and corrosion, so you won't be replacing them anytime soon. Apart from that, the base comes equipped with non-skid feet that are able to secure the appliance and protect the surface from scratches. Maintenance-wise, the cup is dishwasher safe and the parts are removable and easy to clean.

To bring this thing home, the Homgeek MC-BL818 is what you need when portable blenders do not cut it and countertop models are not an option size- and energy-wise.

What Is a Portable Blender?

Blenders are great. Using these appliances, you’re able to quickly whip up smoothies and create various mixes that allow you to lead an active yet healthy lifestyle. The downside to these appliances is that countertop space is usually limited and there're only so many devices that you can place there.

That’s precisely the reason portable blenders exist. These blenders require the most insignificant space sacrifice. Compact and nimble, these portable models will not be imposing on that precious kitchen space you’d like to conserve.

Despite the compact profile though, these shakers usually have no issues mixing most soft ingredients and are even sometimes able to handle tough items like ice and seeds. Plus, using these portable cups rather than massive pitchers, you can usually take the entire blender with you and when that seems unreasonable, you're always able to bring the cup with you.

Of course, these mobile blenders do not have the same high-octane motors and capacity that countertop blenders have and the sharp blades that food processors employ, so you can look into these appliances too, provided you have enough free space to accommodate them.

What Features to Compare

Power

Setting mechanical appliances aside, all consumer electronics and household appliances are drawing and outputting energy. Of course, portable blenders are not as powerful as countertop models, the size does not allow that.

More often than not, these electrical blenders do not even connect to an outlet. Instead, these pseudo-wireless models come equipped with built-in batteries that you can recharge using most USB-enabled devices, from laptops to power banks. Sometimes though, even portable blenders connect to the mains.

Generally speaking, these blenders draw and output somewhere around 150 watts, enough to whip up delicious smoothies, protein shakes, and cocktails but not always enough to crush ice, nuts, and seeds.

There are also in-between appliances that use somewhere around 300 watts and are less compact than most portable models but still more nimble than standard countertop blenders.

Blending Jar

Countertop models come equipped with pitchers. Portable ones usually incorporate these blending jars that also double as removable standalone cups. These cups usually measure somewhere around 14 ounces and can be carried with you. Occasionally, these jars come fitted with measuring marks that will let you prepare the precise amount and drinking lids with strainers and spouts to enable quick and easy sipping on the go without spilling. Sometimes, the cups that portable models employ are even featuring handles that you can use to carry them with comfort and ease.

Blades

Portable blenders adopt 4-6 blades. These blades are never too sharp, which is always the case with blenders. Even the least expensive models these days are using stainless steel blades, simplifying maintenance and making these blades more durable since they’re not susceptible to rust and corrosion. When equipped with sawtooth blades, a portable model easily crushes ice and most seeds.

Controls

The blenders we’re discussing here are supposed to be simple and accessible, so the controls usually boil down to 1-2 buttons and the settings are basically nonexistent. Every now and then, portable blenders come fitted with LCD screens and basic settings but even when that’s the case there’s not much there compared to full-blown stationary blenders.

Extras

When these portable models do not come equipped with rechargeable batteries, the people behind these models usually equip them with non-skid feet since you’ll still be placing them onto countertops, so the feet make sure the surface remains safe.

Blenders vs Food Processors

Generally speaking, people are usually deciding between blenders and food processors to be able to prepare quick and easy drinks, snacks, and more. At first glance, these appliances can be difficult to separate. Operation-wise, both appliances use blades and various motors to accomplish the tasks, but the mechanisms behind them can be crucially different.

More often than not, blenders’ motors are more capable, able to produce more revolutions per minute, something that allows them to make the smoothest textures and turning the hardest, toughest ingredients into liquids. Blenders’ blades are not sharp though. On the contrary, these are pretty much blunt objects, so even calling them blades is somewhat misleading, albeit correct.

Food processors use rigid, extra-sharp blades, something that enables them to slice through the thickest, more substantial ingredients. With accessories like shredder blades, these processors are able to chop, shred, and grind different items (blenders can sometimes do all that too but that’s beside the point).

In other words, blenders are there to make various liquids, while food processors will be slicing vegetables and handling dough much better than blenders.

Blenders

Smoothies, Cocktails, Sauces

When you’re combining liquid ingredients, the blender’s high-octane motor is what you need. These appliances’ conical shape is able to direct everything to the blades that are at the pitcher’s bottom. Plus, since these pitchers are normally quite deep, you won’t have to worry about overflowing.

Purees

Whipping up veggie purees or emulsifying fat into pureed soups is easy using any half-decent blender. The appliance aerates the mixture, producing the silkiest texture with the most indulgent mouthfeel.

Cakes and pastry Dough

Blenders’ aeration is also what makes these appliances so good at preparing light and smooth batters for different cakes and pastries. Creating this lovely fluffy mixture, blenders make things easy on this front.

Baby Foods

It is hard to imagine any edible item that has to be as soft and even texture-wise as baby foods. That’s why blenders are mothers’ best friends, allowing them to quickly prepare excellent baby food, with very little money, time, and effort investments and also complete control over the ingredients going into these foods.

Food Processors

Pie Dough

Pie crusts, breads, and biscuits incorporate solid dough with a sturdy texture, something that blenders are usually unable to produce. Because food processors’ blades are so sharp though, these appliances have no issues handling them.

Pasta Dough

When different people mix pasta dough manually, the strength and the speed are different too. Using food processors, you’re able to achieve the consistency that’s necessary when running commercial establishments, so food processors can prove useful there too.

Chopped Veggies

Also bread crumbs, most seeds, and various chopped produce. You won’t be able to mince them using blenders. Consistently chopping these ingredients, food processors are able to prepare excellent snacks too.
