Advanced Option

What we have here is one of the latest indoor/outdoor cameras by the Arlo company. No wonder it's also one of the most advanced and comprehensive security cameras not only in the Arlo's lineup but on the whole market as well. The major selling point is that the Arlo Pro 2 goes above and beyond the industry standard of 1080p HD with its amazing 2560p HD video display and 2K HDR sensors. That's why it delivers great video quality and can become the best choice for those who value the crisp image above all.

The Arlo Pro 2 also impresses with the 6500K spotlight that can be controlled manually or set to follow the motion. That’s going to be particularly useful for those who'd like to enable color night videos. The camera also has a traditional infrared night vision with grayscale. In both cases, you can activate an 80-decibel siren that is triggered by motion and/or sound. Speaking of which, the camera has two-way audio and allows for speaking to whoever approaching your property. Best of all, the two-way audio is full duplex, meaning it works like a phone rather than walkie-talkie devices. So, the audio will always be clean.

One more advanced feature is the object detection function which helps the camera to differentiate between people, packages, vehicles, and animals. To make notifications even more specific, you can set your activity zones.

Besides object detection, the Arlo Pro 3 boasts smoke and carbon dioxide alarm. Once it detects smoke or CO, it'll send alerts to your smartphone (T3 for smoke detectors and T4 for CO detectors). Then, you'll be able to swiftly call emergency services thanks to the e911 feature.

Quick to Install

The Arlo Pro 3 is really easy to set-up provided that you have the Arlo SmartHub. You should first plug in the hub with the ethernet cable and power adapter, then charge the camera’s battery (comes with a magnetic charge cable), and download the app that will walk you through the rest of the setup process. As a nice touch, the camera integrates successfully into any smart home system, no matter whether you have Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple Watch.

All this makes the Arlo Pro 3 a very comprehensive piece of security that is surely worth extra money. The set includes two high-quality cameras that deliver stunning 2K video resolution and can be mounted either indoors or outdoors. They connect wirelessly to your local network and can give you a wide variety of different notifications.

Better Picture Quality, Greater Field of View

The EufyCam 2C 3-Cam Kit currently offers one of the best pictures on the market. Designed with the Smart Image Enhancement technology, it ensures a clearer, brighter view of the people in-shot and crystal clear record footage in 1080p HD. Another great improvement is that the EufyCam 2C offers a large 135° diagonal field of view, which is wider compared to most other surveillance cams. Therefore, you'll be able to mount the cameras closer to your front door and still see a similar coverage area. Not to mention, this will also lead to better motion detection. Speaking of which, the built-in human detection AI technology identifies body shapes and face patterns, thus, focusing only on humans rather than stray animals.

Yet, the best part is that all the cameras are made with the built-in spotlight illuminating the surrounding area and allowing you to see even the night pictures in color clarity (IR setting is also available). The built-in light also does double duty by scaring away unwanted visitors who wouldn't have otherwise known cameras were there. Even better, you can set the alarm to sound anytime motion is detected.

Speaking about the construction, the cameras are aesthetically pleasing with a curved white plastic body and a black front plate. Boasting an IP67 weatherproof-rating, they are also ready for any weather. The build quality of the cameras, hub, and mounts is solid, meaning strong gusts of wind will do nothing to them. Plus, since the units are made with built-in 6700mAh batteries, they require no cable connection. Just screw the cameras onto the supplied mount wherever you want. When the batteries run low, you'll need to unscrew the cameras and plug them into a standard micro USB cable. The full charge takes approximately 5 hours and provides 180 days of battery life.

No Need for Subscription

Setting up the whole kit is also a breeze. Just open box, plug in the hub and hardwire to the router. Then install the proprietary app and add cameras by following the prompts in the app. The user interface is pretty nice with all the settings for motion detection sensitivity and AI. The app also lets you set up "activity zones" to pinpoint where you want the activity to trigger recording. Record time can be set to your preference as well. Yet, we don't recommend you to record for longer than 20 seconds, since you might affect the battery life and storage.

By default, the cameras store all the videos in their base station and you don't need any paid subscription. The base has 16GB of storage, which is enough for approx. 3 months of recording. When the memory gets full, the home hub will loop over. Also, you can save some records right onto your phone storage, SD card, or USB port (slots are provided). Considering the lack of any subscription requirement, great picture quality, and lots of useful features, the eufyCam 3C has everything you're likely to want in a high-end home security system.

For Larger Areas

If you're looking for an extensive surveillance system to monitor a large area, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better option than the heimvision HM241 set. The pack includes as many as four IP cameras and costs less than $200, which we consider a great value. Moreover, the system can support up to eight channels simultaneously, meaning you can get four more cameras to cover your security needs. This makes the heimvision system ideal for monitoring not only villas and large homes but also commercial and semi-commercial facilities like offices, schools, shops, hotels, and warehouses.

For your convenience, the cameras employ a 2-axis adjustable bracket and are suitable for both wall and ceiling mounting. Actually, you can install the system anywhere since the cameras are made from high-quality metal materials and have an IP66 weatherproof rating. So, even if showers or dust storms are frequent guests in your region, you shouldn't be afraid of rust or malfunctions.

Once installed, these security cameras will provide a 110° wide view angle and record in 1080P HD resolution, capturing crisp images both in the daylight and at night. The cameras don't lose signal and offer instant motion detection and mobile alerts. If someone is approaching your property, they will send snapshot alerts to your phone as soon as the motion is detected.

Simple Setup

Besides four cameras, the box includes an 1080P Wireless Network Video Recorder (NVR), and as a nice touch, all of the cameras come already pre-matched to this NVR. So, it's a type of plug-and-play system that requires minimum installation adjustments. All you need to do is connect the NVR and IP cameras with power supply. Do note that even though the system is called wireless, the cameras aren't really wire-free (don't have built-in batteries), so you'll have to plug them into a power outlet for 24/7 electricity supply. Yet, there is no need to run a video cable between the cameras and NVR, which facilitates the installation.

The compatible "IP Pro" app makes it possible to access the cameras simultaneously on any smart device at any time and from anywhere with Wi-Fi, 2G, 3G, or 4G coverage. That is to say, you can even view the cameras by hooking the hardware up to your TV or PC monitor. The system already comes with a mouse that you can use to navigate the screen. The control is pretty straightforward, with the options being mostly limited to recording and auto-deleting the old data. The extras include sync-playback, video backup, alerts, and motion detection. So, if you need a simple system for a large property, the heimvision HM241 can be a worthwhile investment. This security system provides great clarity of videos, wireless hookup, and a good range of recording features.

Neat Design

Of course, there are many higher-end indoor/outdoor security cameras on the market, but the Ring Stick Up Cam is surely a worthy addition to our shortlist. It costs half as much as the leading brands but it can give many of them a run for the money. Actually, it's a good-quality Wi-Fi camera that has a nice design and offers plenty of smart functions to its users.

To begin with, the Ring Stick Up camera sports a cylinder-shaped design (available in black or white) and can be connected to the swivel base that stands steadily on any flat surface. Alternatively, you can detach the mount and re-attach it to the back of the camera so as to use it on a wall. It has an IPX5 weatherproof rating and works in the range of temperatures from -5 to 122 degrees F. What also makes it an attractive choice for outdoor use is the built-in battery that lasts from 6 to 12 months and needs only 5-10 hours to recharge. Optionally, the camera can be connected to a solar panel for a non-stop power supply.

Needless to say, since the Ring Stick Up Cam runs on a battery, it can be mounted just about anywhere your Wi-Fi network reaches. What is great, it uses standard 802.11n (2.4GHz) Wi-Fi and connects directly to your home network without a need for a hub, which means it's amazingly easy and quick to install.

When it comes to video quality, the Ring Stick Up cam captures video at 1080p and has a quite modest field of view (110° horizontal and 57° vertical). Yet, daytime videos show good color quality, while black-and-white night videos get very sharp. So, at a quick glance, you'll be able to check who's approaching your front door, a friend or a foe. As a nice touch, the night LED sensors are very subtle and nearly invisible to strangers.

Get The Most Out of It

Moving on, we'd like to mention that the Ring Stick Up Camera has no option for storing videos locally, meaning you can just stream live videos from the camera on the Ring app. However, by subscribing to the Ring Protect plan, you'll be able to save videos and photos to cloud storage and download them locally to your device if needed. The plan costs only $3/month per device (or $10/month per household), which is more than reasonable.

Overall, the Ring Stick Up Cam can be a wise investment for those who need a budget-friendly outdoor security camera. It's a wireless model that can be mounted indoors or out, offers decent video quality and has infrared night vision as well as two-way audio. More than enough for basic protection.

For Indoor Use

The Wyze Cam Pan is an excellent model for home use. As the name suggests, it's able to pan all the way around (360° horizontally), and even tilt 90° vertically. So, if you'd like to see your entire room, this model will fit you to a tee.

To begin with the design, the Wyz indoor camera looks like a white mini prism with a black circular camera in the center. Overall, it's super sleek and minimalist, something like only Apple engineers could create. Therefore, it can blend seamlessly into most modern interiors.

As far as the performance is concerned, the unit is able to zoom in eight times and record black-and-white night videos (quipped with 6 infrared LEDs). As a nice extra, the camera allows for a 360° "motion tracking" by following the movement all around the room. So, if your curious baby is crawling somewhere or your kitty is ruining your new furniture, you can follow them and speak to them if needed. The camera is fitted with both a microphone and a speaker, allowing for two-way audio.

Also, it's made with a micro-SD card letting you record continuously regardless of motion and sound. The Free cloud storage recording is available as well - the camera saves 12-second video clips to the cloud for 14 days.

Intuitive App

To access the Wyze Pan camera remotely, you’ll need to download the Wyze app from the Apple or Google Play store. Once you're done, you'll be able to live-stream footage, review your videos, create time-lapse videos, use two-way audio, and check notifications. Speaking of which, the Notifications tab displays not only the history of all sound and motion alerts but also smoke and CO ones.

Overall, the WyzeCam app is quite straightforward and has a user-friendly interface with an intuitive layout. It allows you to tap the thumbnail so as to play the videos, share them with your friends or relatives, as well as delete them. A gear icon at the top takes you to the configuration menu where you can enable/disable motion and sound, set their sensitivity levels, create a recording schedule, and more.

All things considered, we can highly recommend the Wyze Cam Pan for those who need an affordable indoor security camera with a simple app, mechanical pan/tilt options, motion tracking, and both local and free cloud storage. Although you won’t get the extra-high resolution or flashy AI features, the Wyze Cam is still a real bargain you can't miss.

What Is a Security Camera?

The significant rise of home break-ins and thefts has put most of us on high alert. So, equipping your home with a good security camera seems to be a worthwhile investment. Only the presence of a surveillance camera may be enough to deter most would-be burglars. Not to mention, many cameras can emit loud sound alerts to scare away unwanted visitors, as well as send immediate notifications to homeowners.

Luckily, today the market offers a wide variety of video surveillance systems that exemplify the rapid development of the industry. These security camera systems perform a wide range of tasks, from the surveillance on out to moving objects detection in a certain area inside homes. Depending on the intended use, security cameras can have different versions, be fitted with different controls and data processing equipment. In this review, we take a look at some of the most popular security camera systems for both indoors and outdoors available on the market today. By choosing one of them, you'll be able to keep a finger on the pulse of what’s happening outside or inside your home.

It is worth noticing that most modern security cameras work through a WiFi connection. So, if you don't have wireless coverage in your home yet, make sure to check out our review of the top-quality wireless routers as well.

Best Security Cameras

What Features to Compare

Type

First things first, you should decide which tasks you want your security camera system to perform for you. This will help you to understand whether to choose from indoor models or go for those designed for outdoor use. Further on, you should look into the operation principle of a chosen model so that you will know whether you'll need Wi-Fi coverage or not. To recap, you can choose either a wireless camera or a wired one as well as for indoor or outdoor use. In general, outdoor security cameras are considered more reliable, as they, usually, feature better casing and better protection against the impact and elements.

  • Speaking of wired models, these, as it's easy to guess, work via cables. The advantage to this type is that it allows connecting a camera to the already existing system as well as it grants access to security camera's data from different equipment, including remote one connected to the Internet. Wired security cameras offer high reliability and security of data transfer. Plus, they are less sensitive to signals of mobile phones, Bluetooth-enabled devices and other appliances.
  • Wireless security cameras have a lot going for them, too. Connected to a recording device wirelessly, these cameras broadcast video data directly to a registered user's device on demand, rather than to the local video recording equipment. Besides, some models allow recording video to the camera's SD card, making it possible to save important data in a convenient manner. By opting for a wireless security camera, you'll get access to video broadcasting in real time from practically any location, which is the biggest advantage of this type.

Video Quality and Features

After that, you need to consider the camera optics so as to figure out how good and accurate your videos will be. For that, make sure to take a look at such tech specs as video shooting resolution and viewing angle. Without making it difficult, here's the rule: the higher the resolution, the more detailed the image will be, and the bigger the viewing angle, the larger the area a camera will cover. Next, consider what shooting modes are supported. Among many available, the most popular are shooting in the darkness, long distance filming, automatic video recording start and user notification system alerting to the motions detected in the field of its view.

Control and Storage

Finally, you should check the storage options provided, i.e. how the camera stores data and how you'll be able to access them later. If we're talking about wired models, these usually use some local recording equipment - make sure this equipment is good. As for most wireless cameras, they broadcast video online, making it possible to use just about any storage method that best suits you. Some allow recording video directly to an SD card, so if this option suits you, make sure the camera allows for that.
