You can go as fast as 12 MPH, so unlike most treadmills, the machine enables sprinting too. The side flywheel neutralizes vibrations, so the deck remains stable even when you're sprinting and jumping. The Reflex™ suspension system absorbs each stride but can also be turned off.

CONS

The Bluetooth module is unstable (gets frequently disconnected).

OUR VERDICT

Between the interactive personal coaching hub, the decline settings, the 40 onboard workout presets, and the huge, 22-inch screen, there's considerable distance between the NordicTrack NTL19119 and its peers, even when these peers themselves are supposed to be premium models.

NordicTrack NTL19119 Commercial Series

Downhill Running Too

The NordicTrack NTL19119 is massive, referring to the model's size, parameters, attributes, everything. The machine has been designed with commercial spaces and applications in mind, so the price and certain details might scare different customers. To begin with, its load capacity pushes 300 pounds, which is huge since that means that people with some considerable excess weight can use the machine too, so they do not have to lose weight before they can start losing weight.

At the same time, this treadmill also weighs ~350 pounds, so not something you want to be lugging between rooms, right? Size-wise, the machine's not very modest either, measuring 79.5 x 39.2 x 66.6 inches, not something that most living rooms can easily accommodate.

What we have here is a workhouse, pretty comfortable at that too. Its deck features considerable cushioning, engaging the dampeners and softening the impact on the joints. But you can also go with an opposite approach, disengaging the dampeners and simulating road-running experience.

Now, most treadmills come equipped with cushioning, even though most cannot let you choose between activating and deactivating it. Most 'mills will also enable you to run uphill, with somewhere between 0 and 10-15% incline options. But very few models have decline grade setting, which's unfortunate because running downhill is pretty important too as you're building different muscles than when running straight and uphill. Here, you can do that, although only between 0 and 3%.

Review of NordicTrack NTL19119 Commercial Series Folding Treadmill

22 Inches of Screen Real-Estate

Aside from decline settings, what defines this product is probably the gigantic 22-inch screen. Even though the machine includes phone holders, not unlike most treadmills with screens, they will usually prove unnecessary since the gigantic display more than gets the job done, streaming content via an integrated Bluetooth module and blasting rich, loud audio from embedded speakers.

Generally speaking, even commercial 'mills are usually offering somewhere around 15-20 programs. This model doubles these expectations, providing you with 40 onboard workout programs to choose from.

The last stop before wrapping this one up is the commercial-grade 4.25 HP DurX™ motor. Aside from enabling the aforementioned load capacity and without going into obscure details like its internal cooling system, what separates this motor is the side flywheel neutralizing vibrations and keeping the running belt smooth.

Besides everything we have addressed above, the machine's not that different from most treadmills but these few differences are enough to justify its price and size. In other words, people who are serious about running and have the necessary financial means should definitely look towards this model. People who are thinking about starting an elite gym should also consider that.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7515 Smart

Running Inclines

As impressive as the monstrosity we have reviewed above is, even most running enthusiasts will find the machine too much. Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7515, on the other hand, is right on the money, not offering anything unnecessary but also not limiting most runners, even those who are serious about running.

First things first, the machine lets you run uphill, choosing anywhere between 0 and 12% incline. Because running inclines is an effective resistance training method too, building calves, quads, hamstrings, and glutes, as well as strengthening hip flexors ad Achilles' tendons, treadmills that do not enable hill running will always be lagging behind those that do.

On a less positive note (to some extent), at this moment, the model costs around $650, which is not even approaching the mid-range segment. With that budget models come certain limitations, including the maximum speed capping at 8 MPH. Is that bad? No, 8 MPH is an above-average running speed that will satisfy most runners but, because the machine does not provide anything above that, sprinting will not be an option.

What will be an option though are the 12 onboard workout programs that the machine's shipped with, manipulating time, speed, and incline. You can also select between 3 countdown modes, targeting separate workout goals and focusing on distance, time, or calories burned.

Review of Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7515 Smart Folding Treadmill

Soft Drop Hydraulic Folding Mechanism

Not unlike most treadmills nowadays, this machine's featuring deck cushioning, lessening the impact force on the legs and joints and extending the workout sessions because you're experiencing less fatigue than when running outdoors on hard asphalt without shock absorption. Unfortunately, despite the cushioning, the running belt becomes pretty noisy at high speeds, which is an issue you cannot fix but can somewhat bypass with the model's integrated speakers, the Bluetooth module, and two separate phone holders. The machine even has a microphone, so you can call hands-free while running.

Adding to its advantages, this 'mill is among the most convenient folding treadmills. Featuring the company's Soft Drop hydraulic folding system, the machine enables safe and hassle-free folding and unfolding, while the transportation wheels will allow for easy and effortless relocation.

Long story short, the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7515 lands among the most complete and well-balanced budget home treadmills for running, even without counting its heart rate monitoring and step counting functions.

Goplus 2 in 1 Walking/Running

Ant-Like Efforts

The Goplus Folding Treadmill is an interesting one. To get the ball rolling, the machine weighs around 70 pounds and measures just 49 x 27 x 42 inches, landing among the most compact treadmills. Nevertheless, its weight capacity reaches 265 pounds, which is pretty insane considering that most 'mills can seldom support twice what they weigh themselves and this one almost quadruples that. Plus, adding to the lightweight construction, the transportation wheels make the model quite portable, so moving this one between different rooms will not prove a considerable challenge.

Setting these numbers aside, as the "2-in-1" name suggests, this machine from Goplus lets you choose between 2 sport modes, folding the stand with the handrails and using the model as an under desk treadmill for walking or putting the stand back and using the machine the same way you usually use treadmills.

Its 2.25-HP motor is pretty quiet, reducing vibrations and not producing much noise, so you can even put this 'mill in an office without worrying about disturbing colleagues. However, because the machine is so lightweight, you need to make sure that the surface underneath it is 100% flat. Otherwise, the 'mill might wobble around.

Review of Goplus 2 in 1 Walking/Running Folding Treadmill

5-Layer Deck

As you can imagine, we're not reviewing sophisticated, multi-layered machinery here (aside from the literally layered deck that we will examine a little down the line), so do not come expecting numerous workout programs incline settings. No, the machine will not give you those. You will, however, be able to set the speed anywhere between 0.6 and 7.5 MPH, so walking, jogging, and running will all be available options to you. Using the built-in speakers will be an available option too, connecting any Bluetooth-enabled device via the model's Bluetooth module.

Now, the running deck is where things get interesting again. Its 5-layer construction includes a wear-resistant surface, an insulation layer, a high-strength support layer, a shock-absorbing layer, and a compression layer. To no one's surprise (but everyone's approval), the shock-absorbing part will provide cushioning, reducing the impact on the runner's legs, while the surface with its anti-slip texture will prevent accidents.

Apart from everything we have already outlined, the cutout with the platform above the stand will hold and balance most gadgets, whereas the small LED screen will enable monitoring motion data in both modes, completing this already versatile product that will suit people working from home as well as in offices.

Miageek 2 in 1 Walking/Running

Under Desk Treadmill

The folding treadmill from Miageek is not much different from the one we have reviewed above. Sure, some specs are different, certain features are not quite alike, but the core principle remains about the same, the principle being that you can choose between using the machine like standard treadmills, elevating the small stand with the handrails and also folding them and hiding the 'mill underneath a standing desk, so you can mix working and working out.

In some ways, this machine is a little less impressive than its contemporary above, weighing five pounds more and peaking at 220 pounds from the maximum weight capacity angle. The last is quite unfortunate, but the model's not without its advantages too.

We can start with an ergonomic remote that lets you choose any speed between 0.4 and 7.5 MPH without reaching for the console, partially because the console is nonexistent here. What you have is this small LED screen on the bottom, displaying time, speed, distance, and calories burned. Even though the screen measures less than 6 inches, the metrics are visible without bending down, the font is large and noticeable, and the backlighting will make these metrics visible even in low-light conditions.

Not necessarily related but the machine comes fully assembled, so you can put this compact 'mill (measuring 49 x 27 x 42 inches) almost anywhere without sacrificing considerable space that most people want to conserve and start running basically straight from the box.

Review of Miageek 2 in 1 Walking/Running Folding Treadmill

Portable Treadmill

Again matching its direct competition, this machine adds five separate layers to the deck, cushioning the impact, stabilizing the running belt, reducing vibrations, and minimizing noise, slipping, and skidding. Keeping its operation quiet, this cushioned treadmill will let you reach the most ambitious fitness goals without disturbing the people around you.

Tossing these details aside, the model's not unlike what we've come to expect from home gym 'mills, including embedded speakers that you can connect via an also embedded Bluetooth module to most gadgets and this little gadget stand that fits even 10-inch tablets. Finally, there are wheels on the bottom, enabling comfortable transportation between rooms.

To sum up, the Miageek Folding Treadmill will fit practically any environment, from crowded offices to apartments that you're sharing with multiple roommates. It will let you walk, jog, and run with comfort and without disturbing the roommates/colleagues.

Merax 12 Programs

Grass Pattern Belt

The Merax Folding Treadmill is a little basic/barebones compared to most non-convertible models. No, from certain angles, the machine's pretty good, even impressive at times. But its downsides are no less significant. From where we're standing, most are not that important but the limited maximum speed is something we will not let slide. Capping at 6.5 MPH, the machine will let you run, sure, but we're not talking about serious running, we're talking about something between what running enthusiasts classify as running and jogging.

Again, this is quite unfortunate because everything else here does not disappoint, starting with the anti-slip tread belt and its spacious, 15.7-inch running space. Measuring 15.7 inches wide, the belt lets you stretch out the strides, so you can jog and run feeling comfortable and unrestricted and not like you're walking a tight rope. Meanwhile, the anti-slip treatment features this grass pattern texture that ensures excellent friction, improving the grip and traction as you run.

Even though the maximum speed is somewhat limited, the 'mill still offers 12 pre-installed workout programs, manipulating workout intensity and creating different challenges.

Review of Merax 12 Programs Folding Treadmill for Home

Following the Standard Recipe

For the most part, we're not seeing anything different from the common treadmill playbook here. The console is pretty standard, with the LED screen displaying speed, time, distance traveled, heart rate, and calories burned. Next to the screen are the buttons that are large and responsive, featuring enough separation to minimize misclicking and let you activate the functions without squeezing them. As always (almost always anyway), there's an emergency stop button smooshed between the controls, so you can always bring the belt to an abrupt halt when that's necessary.

The handrails that are attached to the console come equipped with EKG sensors, so you can grip them and measure the heart rate while running. Also, there are extra speed controls on the 'rails, so you can increase and decrease the speed without even touching the console.

What else is there to add? The maximum load capacity measures 240 pounds, pretty darn good relative to the machine's ~73-pound construction. There's this nice little shelf where you can put your phone/tablet and two cup holders to the sides, nothing new. In short, assuming that you don't like running at high speed, the Merax Folding Treadmill should fit your bill. It is an affordable and decent 'mill for home use, nothing more but also nothing less.

What Is a Treadmill?

One of the most popular pieces of sports equipment widely used between enthusiastic sportsmen as well as professionals is a treadmill, a device designed for walking and running while staying in place. It's not surprising as treadmills offer plenty of health benefits in addition to aiding in building a beautiful body shape. First, it boosts metabolism encouraging a more effective fat burn. Second, it also helps in improving blood circulation and training your respiratory system by increasing the heartbeat rate and pumping your lungs. Third, it's safe virtually for everyone as it doesn't put a lot of load on your joints and back. And finally, jogging elevates our mood and inspires high spirits, thus greatly promoting our well-being. So, if you weren't jogging before, it's time to get started right now. You don't even need to go out for that. With one of the treadmills we've handpicked for you here, you can jog anytime you're up to it in the privacy of your own home.

Another device we'd like to draw your attention is an elliptical machine. Just like a treadmill, it's used for active exercises simulating running. The difference is only in the load that's put on your spinal cord, making it a better choice for overweight enthusiasts worried about muscle strains. Check them out too and choose what suits you better.

What Features to Compare

Types

There are 2 types of fitness treadmills to choose from - manual and electric. When it comes to manual ones, all is plain and simple. You control at which pace you run by, well, actually running - the faster you walk/run, the quicker the treadmill belt will move. The downside is, the moment you get tired and decide to make a stop, the speed of the treadmill belt will drop too, thus affecting your workout results. On the positive side, these fitness machines are usually rather inexpensive and can be easily moved from place to place, making them an excellent choice for those who seek portable equipment in a budget-price range.

As for electric units, these are driven by a power motor and can go as high as 10-12 mph for home-use machines and 25 mph for high-end commercial equipment When choosing an electric treadmill, it's recommended to look in the direction of models fitted with a 2.2HP motor or more potent - they will not only be able to hold a greater user weight but also ensure smoother and more stable operation. It's also worth checking out how many inclines and other adjustable settings are included in the machine as they will directly affect the intensity of workouts.

Although treadmills aren't designed in the same way, most of them consist of the same elements, namely, a metal frame, running belt, screen, and handlebars. Speaking of the running belt, pay attention to its size; a belt that measures 15" х 50" is considered optimal. Also worth checking out is the presence of shock absorbers which are used to dampen noises.

Special Features

When purchasing a treadmill, you should pay attention to the special features. To let you keep track of your results, treadmills are designed with LED screens displaying information on a distance you've passed, speed rate, time, burnt calories, and more. Also, treadmills can include such functions as a heart rate measurement, MP3-player, and various workout programs, adding to the efficiency of exercising. Safety should not be overlooked too - it's important that a treadmill you choose features a stop clip, allowing you to pause the machine if a pace becomes too fast for you and you want to take a break.

Usability

If you're buying a treadmill for home use, check its size and make sure it fits in your room. Most treadmills come fitted with wheels allowing you to move them when needed. The working surface of such models can be lifted and attached to the vertical pillar. You can also find foldable models, enabling even more compact storage when the machine is not in use. Finally, we recommend checking out the deck of a treadmill - those that have some kind of cushion put less load on your joints, thus minimizing injuries and strains during workouts.

Treadmills vs Running Outside

What we have here is an age-old question that cardioheads have been debating with almost the same fervor that they display towards running. The issue here is that, debate all you want, there are obvious upsides and downsides to both approaches and there's no reason not to switch between them when the opportunity is there.

Treadmills Pros

Weather conditions? Temperature constraints? Treadmills, unless you put them outside, are not about that elements life. When running outdoors, the temperature is seldom as comfortable as you'd want it to be. When it is too hot, you're risking dehydration and heat exhaustion. When the opposite's the case, sure, the body temperature will rise as you're running but, even with gloves, hands can get cold and uncomfortable fast. Besides, rains and snows can make running downright dangerous. To add more, you do not have to worry about wearing sunscreen and dressing to match the temperature when you're running indoors.

Marathons are no joke, hence why most people, even experienced athletes, prepare before running them. The issue is that you probably do not have access to varying training routes next to you, with hills and whatnot. Using treadmills though, you can simulate certain race conditions, which means that these machines can also be used to prepare for hilly marathons.

Even with smartwatches and activity trackers, controlling the pace is hard. With cardio machines, it is the easiest task in the world. Choose the speed setting you want and you know that you'll be running at, say, 8 miles per hour and not even a smidge faster or slower.

You can listen to music and podcasts when running outside, sure. But, when running on 'mills, you can even watch movies and page through magazines, meaning that these machines provide more multi-tasking opportunities.

Most people's ankles and knees are already fragile because we do not show them to love and care that they deserve. The treadmills' smooth, cushioned surface offers shock absorption that pavements are unable to match, which means that the stress on joints is reduced.

Treadmills Cons

Treadmills are not cheap (though we've reviewed budget models that will only cost you ~400 bucks). Even gym memberships that give you temporary access to treadmills are not that cheap either. Running outdoors is free though. Sure, you'd probably want to purchase marathon shoes but you do not necessarily need them to run.

You cannot go downhill. Even the least inexpensive cardio machines these days allow you to incline the deck and simulate running up the hill. But these machines do not decline, so you cannot run downhill, meaning that you cannot train anterior tibialis muscles using treadmills.

They will not let you make turns. Lateral agility is something that even adults should work on improving and since cardio machines cannot incorporate turns, you cannot use them to do that.

Even with movies and TV series, running indoors is usually less fun than running outside, making the workout more boring when you do not switch things up from time to time.
