Shark ION Robot S87
Two are Better than One
Understanding that one of the major complaints about robotic vacuums is their skipping corners, Shark has come up with a unique cleaning system consisting of both the robot and cordless handheld WANDVAC™, which allows the unit to effectively clean under furniture and in the corners as well as reach all those hard-to-get spots that robots usually miss.
At just 1.4 pounds, the ION Robot S87 cordless handheld vacuum is also light enough for above-floor cleaning. And for more versatility, it comes with a multi-surface pet tool, crevice tool, and a soft dusting brush. All the attachments along with a high-speed, brushless motor provide unbelievable suction. The only thing not so nice about them is that they don’t fit on the vac's base or charging dock. Therefore, you'll need some extra space in your closet to store the nozzles.
The handheld itself connects to the robot's charging base. So, two innovative Shark products can be neatly charged in the same dock, addressing on-floor and above-floor cleaning problems simultaneously.
Extra Powerful
Moving on to the Shark ION Clean Robot vacuum, we can say it's an excellent cleaner, for the most part. The design of the unit is very clever - it’s smaller than other robot vacuums and can get under low furniture. It easily maneuvers from floors to carpets and works well on both tile floors and carpeted surfaces. It may, however, struggle with grain-like particles like sand or sugar in normal mode. But if you activate the Max Mode, you'll get 3X more suction capable of sending even the tiniest debris to an XL dust cup.
The robot has a built-in Wi-Fi module and can be easily connected to your smartphone via the Shark app. Also, it supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
All things considered, if you’re after a powerful and versatile cleaning system, the Shark S87 is currently the best offer on the market. A robot vacuum delivers good on-floor cleaning, while a cordless hand vacuum gives above-floor versatility.

Shark ION Robot R85
Edge Cleaning
The Shark ION R85 is another strong performer in the Shark's robot lineup that has quite a lot to offer. It boasts powerful floor-to-carpet performance and can collect even the tiniest debris like pet hair and spills.
Designed with the main brushroll and two spinning side brushes, it effectively sucks debris even from edges: the central brushroll is made of spiral bristles and rubberized blades to ensure effective multi-floor cleaning, while two side brushes capture debris from corners and pull it into the path of the main brushroll.
By the way, the spinning brushes are a little different than those on other Shark models. They have only one “arm” and spin a bit slower. That's why the vac doesn't fling debris around that much.
The overall interface of the unit is quite straightforward with a large “Clean” button in the center and two smaller “Dock” and “Max” buttons on the sides. That is to say, the mentioned Max suction feature is useful for vacuuming high-pile carpets.
Navigation
When it comes to navigation, the Shark R85 does a rather good job. Backed with the latest “Smart Sensor Navigation 2.0”, the robot drives around your house in search of dirt to vacuum up. It zigzags its way, lightly touching the obstacles and then reversing in another direction until the whole area is clean. Simply put, the navigation system is based on obstacle avoidance rather than on room mapping. So, the R85 may spend a bit too much time bumping into things and then running over the area it's just cleaned.
If you need to set some limits, the manufacturer provides the BotBoundary strip with the vac. The strip is 8’ long and you can simply lay it down on the floor in case you want to block some areas with pet bowls, for example. The said BotBoundary strip can be cut into shorter lengths if needed.
Compared to previous generations, this robot has an enlarged dust cup, meaning it can clean for longer before you'll need to empty it. All this makes the Shark R85 a well-valued product perfect for large homes. It cleans more thoroughly and longer.

Shark ION Robot (R75)
Smart Detangling Technology
At first glance, it may seem that the Shark ION Robot R75 is very basic, though, it is definitely not and it has many features going for it. First things first, we'd like to note a special Detangling technology - it helps the device to deal with hair, dust, and debris without you having to control it. Plus, it eliminates the need to brush clean surfaces afterward.
Secondly, the Shark ION Robot R75 offers Wi-Fi connectivity and integration with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, which is a nice feature. You also have an option to download the Shark app to your smartphone that will let you operate and schedule your vac remotely, no matter where you are.
Next down the list is design. The Shark ION Robot R75 has a rather slim and low profile, which allows it to pick dust in hard-to-reach areas, corners and under furniture. That, however, comes at a price - its dust bin capacity is rather average (10 oz) and you'll need to empty it more regularly. The filter in the vac is high-efficiently - it effectively traps not only dust and dirt but also allergens, so in addition to cleanliness, you can also enjoy health benefits and breathe clean and fresh air.
Fits Everywhere
Performance of this automatic vacuum is impressive thanks to the innovative brushes with helix bristles that guarantee thorough and quality cleaning time after time. Another benefit of these brushes is that you can run them on both hard wood and soft floors and they will do the job really well, leaving nothing for you to clean up.
The Shark R75 has a sensor navigation system, of course. It lets it move in certain cleaning patterns, allowing it to pick up dust, debris and fur in one go.
Self-docking works well too. You receive all alerts and, when the robot needs to recharge, it automatically returns to the station to get ready for the next use.
To conclude, the Shark ION Robot R75 is a great value. It requires minimal supervision. The dual side brushes effectively work on both wood and soft floors. And you get around 60 minutes of cleaning time, which is not bad at all.

iRobot Roomba 690
For Every Household
Would you like to keep your beautiful hardwood or tiled floors clean? Tired of constantly dealing with spills in the kitchen? Don’t worry, the iRobot Roomba 690 will lend you a helping hand. Despite its tiny size, this smart gadget yields enough power to clean the entire house of dust and dirt in a minimum amount of time.
The benefit of this vac cleaner is that it quickly adapts to different types of flooring, meaning it will be effective both on carpets and hard floors. Highly sensitive sensors allow it to build an accurate map of your house so that it can avoid running into corners, furniture, and people.
There's one thing about the iRobot Roomba 690 which might somewhat complicate its use - this robotic cleaner determines all high objects as obstacles and bypasses them; this may be a problem if there are many fluffy carpets in your house. Having said that, if your carpets are of standard thickness, the Roomba 690 will handle them perfectly. Furthermore, you can manually guide it onto the carpets using remote controls or voice commands so it doesn't consider them as obstacles.
It'll be fair to say that this robotic vacuum isn't the best option for deep cleaning, however, you won't find a lot of robots that would fit this task anyway.
What Makes the Roomba 690 So Effective?
The iRobot Roomba 690 is equipped with a special double-brush system that makes cleanups easier and more thorough, picking up both small dust and bigger debris like food crumbs, fur clumps, etc. The device sucks up every speck of dirt it finds sending the air back through a filter that captures even the tiniest dust particles. With the purchase, you get one extra filter for free.
A virtual barrier is also included so you can restrict the movement of your Roomba vacuum cleaner. That way you can keep it away from small children and pets or make sure that it doesn’t accidentally slip out of your house through the door that was left open. The 690 model is also fitted with special Dirt Detect sensors that find areas with high debris concentration. Thanks to that, the device prioritizes cleaning ensuring that all parts of your house are cleaned equally well.

Shark ION Robot RV720
Self Cleaning
The Shark RV720 is the least sophisticated robot in the Shark's range yet it does a great job as an auxiliary vac. It’s fairly comfortable on hardwood floors, low-pile carpets, laminate, and tile. Also, it shows more than passable results at cleaning pet hair and dander, largely owing to its unique brushroll.
This model is made with a Self-cleaning Brushroll, which effectively removes short and long hair, pet dander, dust, and allergens. Afterward, the self-grooming system enables the brushroll to untangle long hair, strings, and fibers on its own. Hence, you won’t have to do it manually.
Another perk is that the RV720 uses an advanced HEPA filter that traps up to 99.9% of tiny particles, keeping the air clean while vacuuming. Allergens and debris get into a 10-oz dust bin. The dust tank easily detaches from the side so that you can empty it quickly and without a mess. As you see, it's great for catching dirt on a daily basis, while requiring low maintenance.
Remote Scheduling
Unfortunately, this vacuum has no Wi-Fi connection and can't be programmed via a smartphone. So, if you would like to control it remotely, the only option is to use the remote control it's delivered with. That being said, you won't have troubles with Wi-Fi compatibility or setting passwords. The initial set up will be significantly faster.
The remote is very functional and just like the app, it lets you set schedules, choose cleaning styles, and everything else the robot is capable of doing. Also, you have the option to program the RV720 directly from the dock, using a set of buttons. The vac works as expected and when it's finished, it returns to the charging station.
The unit uses the Smart Sensor Navigation and seamlessly adapts to surrounding obstacles. If you want to set some limits, you can take benefit from small rubber strips (included in the set) that impede the Shark RV720 from crossing. You can use those strips in the areas where you have a lot of cords, for instance.
Overall, this is a decent robot that can compete with its siblings. What it lacks in connectivity options, it makes up in cleaning performance. And thanks to the Self-cleaning Brushroll, it requires low maintenance.

What Is a Shark Robotic Vacuum?
Shark or SharkNinja is a relatively new company that has already got its name in the cleaning industry. It became famous for its high-quality classic upright vacuum cleaners, which it still produces and does very well at that.
But now, Shark is diversifying their product range, taking the robot worlds by storm. The brand is pushing the boundaries with its innovative, 5-star robotic vacuums designed to improve and simplify your life.
Shark sweats the details to deliver you reliable cordless robots that can solve your above-floor and on-floor problems. Shark robotic vacuum cleaners are powerful, capacious, and maneuverable enough to keep your floors spotless, day after day.
And in case you want to remove not only dirt but also bacteria, bed bugs, fleas, and other nasties lurking in your house, you may be interested in Shark steam mops. This relentless innovator isn't limited to vacuums. Their steamers can do a great sanitizing job, ridding you of need to deal with buckets, chemicals, and regular mops.
What Features to Compare
Intelligence
When it comes to robotic vacuums, the very first thing you need to consider is its intelligence. By this, we mean the number of sensors and navigation technology used. Today Shark robots use Smart sensor navigation 1.0 and Smart sensor navigation 2.0 technologies.
The earlier Shark vacuums use Smart sensor navigation 1.0 technology that utilizes a big number of IR sensors to detect objects. They are called proximity sensors that help a vac to avoid hitting furniture or other obstacles on its way. Take note that vacs move in a random pattern, so they deliver a thorough cleaning at the expense of efficiency. This technology can also be found in iRobot Roombas, DEEBOTs, and EcoVacs.
Models working on Smart sensor navigation 2.0 technology are usually more sophisticated and pricey accordingly. They use more sensitive sensors that won’t allow robots to crash into furniture or walls as it may happen with older models.
Collision sensors inform a cleaning robot if it's near or in contact with some object; drop sensors prevent it from falling off a ledge; dirt sensors notify the robot of areas requiring a deeper clean. These super-intuitive sensors direct the vac in a random wall-to-wall pattern.
Connectivity Options
One more feature to take into account is the compatibility. Top-tier Shark robotic vacuums are featured with built-in Wi-Fi and can be paired with your phone or other smart devices. These robots are also usually compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control services. By choosing one of them, you'll be able to accomplish the vacuuming tasks with zero effort from your side. And the special Shark app will let you give commands and schedule your cleaner using your smartphone wherever you are.
Extras
Sometimes, you may want to keep your robotic vacuum away from certain objects or even rooms. That’s why all Shark vacs are provided with BotBoundary strips - magnetic strips that are adjustable in size. You can simply place them across a doorway or form a halo around pet dishes to limit access to them.
Among other extras, we can highlight additional attachments and nozzles. For example, the most up-to-date model in Shark's robots lineup comes with an additional handheld vac that can be used just anywhere in your house and out of it.
Tips and Tricks for Greater Performance
Here we provide some useful tips from the manufacturer, which can help you achieve the best cleaning results.
As you already know, all Shark robotic vacuum cleaners are designed with Smart Sensor technology (either version 1.0 or 2.0) so they can clean all your house and navigate their way out of tight spaces. However, during the first few cleanings, you can take some simple steps to get the most out of a robot’s performance.
Cords and other obstacles. You should make some adjustments to prepare your house for the first cleaning. Remember that loose cords, pet feeders, and other obstructions can create problems for your vacuum. That’s why you should clear away wires and other odd objects out of its way. Or you can simply block off the tricky areas with the included BotBoundary™ strip
Ultra low furniture. Almost all Shark robots may find their way under low-profile furniture but not all of them will be able to free themselves. If you can, use furniture risers to increase the clearance. But if it’s not the option in your house, it’s advisable to create no-go zones, using BotBoundary strips.
Doorway thresholds. Actually, all Shark robots easily climb over standard thresholds. However, it may be challenging for them to cross rather high thresholds. If that goes for your house, the manufacturer recommends setting the included BotBoundary strips in your doorways to block off tricky areas.
And here are the basic instructions on how to prepare your home using BotBoundary strips.
- Take the BotBoundary strip and cut it to the needed length. 18 inches is the minimum acceptable length. It can cover the whole perimeter of an obstacle or span the length of the doorway that you don’t want your robot to cross.
- Simply lay the strip flat on the surface. You can lay it right on the floor or under a carpet. Make sure that the BotBoundary strip is completely flat against the floor.
- All Shark vacs come with special connectors that can help you create the angles so as to adjust the BotBoundary strips to fit your room. You can use them if needed.
Tip: When setting up the BotBoundary strips, it’s better to either make a loop around a no-go zone with the included connectors or to directly place the strips between stationary objects, like door frames or legs of your sofa.
