Bridge

The main peculiarity of bridges with synchronized tremolo is that a player can increase or decrease the tension of strings using special tremolo. Pushing or pulling movement of tremolo changes the pitch of tone. This effect is widely used in blues and rock. Such well-known guitarists as Steve Vai and John Petrucci actively use tremolo during their play.

What is an Electric Guitar

Any electric guitar beginner faces a question: how to choose an appropriate electric guitar? Fans of rock, metal and blues give preference to buying an electric guitar. Naturally, everyone wants to look like their music idols and professionally master this beautiful music instrument. Unlike an acoustic guitar, the electric guitar works only with a sound amplifier. The electric guitar consists of a wooden body with built-in pickups and a fingerboard. The fingerboard is attached to the body, divided into frets, and has a “head” with pins for fixation and tuning of strings.

If you like not only to listen to music but actually play it, we’d like to turn your attention to specific but absolutely amazing ukuleles. Also, consider buying a guitar amplifier for your guitar.

What Features to Compare

Before you buy a guitar, you should decide on the style that you'd like to play. Electric guitars are all classified into two types: guitars with a solid body and guitars with a hollowed body (similar to acoustic guitars), so-called semi-acoustic electric guitars. The solid-body electric guitars are used to play heavy genres of music such as rock, hard rock and heavy metal. The semi-acoustic guitars are commonly used for playing blues and jazz.

Pickups

Pickups catch the vibrations of strings and convert them into an electrical signal, brought to the amplifier right after. In other words, pickups are the magnetic coils that serve as a microphone to produce a music sound. Pickups can be passive and active. Working off the mains, the active pickups amplify the sound, making it more powerful. The passive pickups don't amplify the sound, hence they are more reliable and popular. Now you can also choose between three pickup configurations:

Humbuckering pickup – the dual pickups (with two coils). The main feature of a humbucker is a rich, bright sound and a powerful output. It is perfect for heavy styles of music such as hard rock, heavy metal and melodies with the distortion effect.

Single-coil pickups – the pickups with a single coil. It provides a sonorous and clean sound. It fits well for both clean and distorted sounds and is perfect for solo playing.

Hum-cancelling pickup - these pickups are similar to a humbucker by the principle of work. They feature two coils too, but placed above each other. A lot of musicians use hum-cancelling pickups instead of single pickups in a recent time.

If you are a beginner and don't want to think about choosing a guitar, you should buy a guitar with a humbucker and a single coil pickup. You will be able to choose a pickup with a special switch on the guitar body. There are also volume and timbre controls to adjust the sound at the output of pickups and change the tone of high and low frequencies. The toggle switches allow a guitar player to set the guitar sound without touching an amplifier at all.

Shape and Material

The shape and material of body and fingerboard of electric guitar are also important. The guitars are made of wood - either maple, alder, mahogany or linden. The cover plates can be made of a different material and serve as a decoration or body protection. The fingerboard is usually either bolted to the guitar or just a neck-through. The options are available. By the way, it's commonly known that mahogany is more favorable for producing rich and low sound while alder is more suitable for producing clearer sounds. At the same time, maple and ash are good for producing aggressive sounds. For the matter, linden can become a golden mean for producing a mixture of sounds at an average pace.

There's a big number of electric guitars on the market, but only few would notice a difference in their shape. Manufacturers have been producing guitars of unique shapes and forms to achieve different sounding and vibrations, and named their products after their brands.

The most frequently copied guitar is Stratocaster. More often than not, these electric guitars are made either of ash or alder. The fingerboard has got 21-22 frets and bolted to the body with 4 bolts. The pins for sound tuning are attached to the guitar and positioned abreast.

Les Paul guitars are also very popular. They are mostly made of mahogany with a maple top. Glued to the body, the fingerboard has 22 frets, arranged 3x3 along the length accordingly. The cover plate is usually made of palisander.

V-shaped solid-body guitars look like the flying arrows and are generally manufactured of mahogany and alder. The fingerboard can be made of  maple and contains 22- 24 frets and 6 pins arranged in a row. The V-shape guitars have changed over time, so “Explorer” model appeared. The solid-body guitars are usually made of mahogany. The fingerboard is glued to a body and features 22 frets and pins located 3+3. These guitars are supplied with 2 humbuckers. They are perfect for heavy music styles like metal and hard rock.

Bridge

Bridge is one of the main component parts of the electric guitar. Bridge affects the vibration of strings when playing. There are two types of bridge: vibrato and non-vibrato. The main peculiarity of the non-vibrato bridge is firm fixation of the strings to the body, with no whammy bar at all. Restringing can be done with only one hand. The advantage of the non-vibrato bridge is that it holds the tune better and considerably longer.

The vibrato bridge includes the lever screwed into the bridge itself. A guitar player can change the tension of strings and the pitch tone accordingly. This bridge system is going to better suit more experienced musicians.
