Timeless Design

The Razor A 13003A-BL Kick Scooter is big-time, coming from the company that became synonymous with kick scooters two decades ago and still proving that the company's timeless design can not only go toe-to-toe with the best upcomers but usually outclass these contenders with champion's poise and grace. To start with, what separates these scooters is the build quality.

Whereas most companies are making these kids' vehicles from shoddy materials and adding flimsy components, the people here are using nothing but top-quality aluminum, making the scooters tough and durable yet lightweight. Chrome-treated, this model does not start forming rust patches with time and, even when stored in humid environments, does not start showing corrosion signs. Since the little vehicle comes pre-assembled, you can unpack the box, unfold the bad boy, and have the kid kicking and rolling it within 5 minutes tops. When the kid is done riding it, Razor's signature folding mechanism will enable easy transportation and storage.

Before dissecting the scooter's construction, it is the model's aesthetic that makes this scooter stand out from the crowd. Sure, kids love bright, fun, jazzy paintworks and logos, we are not making opposite claims. But the model's sleek, polished, and streamlined appearance is something that most kids like even more, looking almost like grown-ups riding this slick little vehicle.

Carrying 143 Pounds

Even though the model weighs modest 4.6 pounds, about 1.5-2 pounds less than most kids' kick scooters, its load capacity stretches 143 pounds, which is no joke, making this scooter suitable not only for 5-year-olds and above but also for big kids. To some extent, we're thanking the wheels here. Made from high-strength polyurethane, these wheels can handle quite a load. They also ensure great traction, so even less optimal surfaces become good enough.

Looking above the wheels, you have the height-adjustable handlebar, with a smooth and responsive adjustment mechanism. The issue here is that the adjustment clearance isn't that great, meaning that you cannot change the height that much. On the bright side, the rear-fender brakes are, as always, pretty reliable, easily bringing the scooter to an abrupt halt even when the kid has gained considerable speed.

Long story short, you cannot go wrong with the Razor A 13003A-BL Kick Scooter, not when you want to make sure the kid can always enjoy the ride and polish his skills.

Intuitive Steering

The youngest, smallest kids usually feel like riding scooters too, except that most kick scooters are too much for them yet. The Micro Kickboard Mini Deluxe is not like that though. No, this one is a little different. First, the model comes equipped with 3 wheels, not unlike most toddler scooters. Second, this adorable vehicle weighs 4.2 pounds, even less than most mini scooters.

Dropping the comparisons, despite its bright appearance, this is one serious product, designed with meticulous attention to detail. To name one, you have the scooter's lean-to-steer mechanism, keeping the ride safe and stable. The more intuitive mechanism minimizes jerky turns, developing the essential balance and coordination skills.

Now, even though the people behind the product are not making any opposite claims, the wheels did not leave us feeling satisfied. They look alright at first, sure, but then they start wearing out within the first 9-12 months (depending on where your kid rides), which is a little upsetting, especially considering that everything else here is quite durable. Not too upsetting though since the wheels are replaceable and do not really cost that much.

Micro Kick Scooter

While the wheels might disappoint down the road, the anodized stem will not, usually lasting years without showing any wear-and-tear signs. Putting the longevity subject to rest, the model incorporates multiple solutions that make the ride more comfortable and enjoyable, including the extra-gippy footplate enabling steady scooting adventures and the low-to-the-ground deck design making the ride feel less bumpy.

Speaking of which, alongside the thick polyurethane wheels (they might not be durable but nobody said anything about them being unstable), the scooter features its flexible fiberglass reinforced deck, absorbing considerable bumps and making every ride more pleasant, even when the sidewalk does not quite facilitate that. Silicone-injected, the deck will also minimize slipping and sliding, making the kid more confident riding this tiny vehicle.

Last but not least, the handlebar is easy to adjust height-wise, using the hex wrench that's shipped with the scooter, while the hand grips extending from this bar will keep the kids' tiny hands comfortable.

Long story short, kids are usually more capable than we think, even at 2-3 years old. Riding the Micro Kickboard Mini Deluxe, your children will show you that, as long as they are riding a solid scooter made for kids, there's nothing to be afraid of.

Light 'em Up

The Jetson Jupiter is more fun than most scooters, convincing anyone who has tried riding this one otherwise will be nigh-impossible. Before discussing everything else, the model comes featuring >100 LED lights, surrounding the deck, stem, and wheels. These lights are not only providing extra visibility and safety riding in the evening but also making sure the kid riding this bright vehicle stands out from most crowds, even the coolest ones. Of course, you can always turn the deck and stem lights off, but the ones that are on the wheels automatically illuminate when the kid starts rolling, which's pretty convenient, though that also means that they will probably die out before the deck and stem lights.

But even without these LEDs, this is one attractive model, matching black paintwork with a chrome headset, clamp, and compression. Though this is a vehicle for boys (and for girls too, absolutely) and not for teenagers, setting aside the whole "more than 100 LEDs" situation, the scooter looks almost grown-up, much more elegant and less gaudy than kids' kick scooters usually look, without excessively bright logos, tasteless stickers, and so on. Plus, the paintwork here does not start fading and wearing out within the first few months, something that you can seldom say about kids' models. To add more, the same paintwork protects the aluminum parts from rust and shields against corrosion.

Easily Adjustable Handlebar

Kids' kick scooters are usually not that different from each other, so you really have to look at the smallest details to separate good scooters from passable ones. The ones that we have reviewed above are working towards putting this model in the first group, whereas the folding mechanism is not quite matching these efforts.

Located near the stem's bottom, the handlebar is supposed to be easy to fold towards the deck but the mechanism is actually a little awkward, so it will probably take the kid quite some time to get used to it, and even then folding and unfolding the scooter will be taking more time than an average kids' kick scooter would.

On the upside, the handlebar is easily adjustable, using the simple latch system that moves the 'bar up and down, quickly securing back into place so that the kids can keep riding as they are growing.

To sum everything up, the Jetson Jupiter will provide hundreds of hours of fun, with the kid looking cooler than the other side of the pillow riding this scooter.

Have a Seat, Little One

The SKIDEE Y200 presents its challenges from reviewers' respective. On the one hand, technically speaking, this is one versatile model, so pinning it down should be easy enough. On the other hand, in reality, the scooter is not as versatile as the company claims. Sure, we love the foldable seat, enabling even kids below 2 years old to ride this tiny vehicle without worrying about falling down. And, yes, between the 3 wheels and the seat, kids can feel safe riding the scooter even on bumpy sidewalks.

But claiming that this is also a scooter for 8-year-olds, let alone for 11-year-olds is a little too much since kids around that age seldom enjoy riding 3-wheeled scooters. So, even though the advertised age range is 2 - 12 years old, we would say the actual age range is closer to 1.5 - 6.

On the bright side, as we have mentioned above, the seat even lets toddlers ride this little vehicle without any worries. When they gain the necessary confidence, balance, and coordination skills, you can always fold the seat and have them riding this scooter like most 3-wheeled models. Also, due to the seat, the model weighs 7 pounds, ~1 pound more than most kids' kick scooters, making this one relatively heavy, even though the difference is not that huge and understandable considering the seat.

What also makes this model excellent for small children is the lean-to-turn steering mechanism that prevents kids from making sharp turns that can cause them to lose balance.

Wide Brakes Too

Gaining excessive speed is what causes most accidents, shocking, we know. With the model's wide back brake pedal, even the least expensive little riders will have no issues bringing this vehicle to an abrupt halt. Atop these wheels, the kids will find the deck, also made pretty wide so that kids can have both wheels on the standing board without feeling uncomfortable.

Even though the product might look like it, this is no cheap toy, made from strong and sturdy aluminum that will survive those kids that are, well, less than cautious, let's just say that.

Now, onto the wheels. First, they have been constructed using heavy-duty polyurethane, so the wheels can withstand serious abuse. Second, they come equipped with LED wheels, lighting up as soon as the wheels start spinning, no batteries required.

Bottom line, even though tweens might find this scooter a tad boring, kids between the ages of 1.5 and 7 will probably fall in love with this fun little vehicle.

Singing the Same Song

The Beleev Adjustable Kick Scooter for Kids is quite similar to the model we have reviewed before this one. From where we're standing, there are only two major differences. First, this model comes without a foldable seat, meaning that most kids below and around 2 years old will not be able to ride this one, hence the product's advertised age range starting at 3. Second, the scooter is not foldable, a little unfortunate but probably not that upsetting since most people should be able to find enough storage space for it anyway (though transportation can prove a little challenging at times). Setting these two differences aside, these scooters have nothing but close similarities between them.

To name one, the product also claims that kids between 3 and 14 years old can ride this model, which is technically correct since its deck is wide enough and the maximum load capacity stretches 110 pounds, making this scooter suitable for 10-year-old boys and above. That being said, most tweens and teenagers do not find 3-wheeled scooters all that exciting, usually preferring 2-wheeled models at that age.

In addition to that, the model looks a little childish, something that children between 3 and ~8 years old will appreciate, sure, but the ones above that might find quite embarrassing. At the same time, little kids will easily get behind the 3-wheeled approach, adding safety and stability.

Gliding Stable, Smooth, and Quiet

Despite the criticism we have laid out above, this is still one solid little vehicle. Made from heavy-duty aluminum, the model will survive considerable abuse throughout the years. The textured and padded grips will make sure that the kids' hands are not hurting, all while providing anti-slip properties. Besides its added width, the deck also boasts an anti-skidding treatment, contributing extra safety points.

Below the deck, the scooter is hiding high-rebound wheels and ABEC-7 bearings, keeping the glide stable, smooth, and quiet. The wheels absorb bumps and make even the hardest surfaces feel less prickly.

Again, not unlike the product above, this model comes equipped with LED lights around the wheels, working without batteries and illuminating as long as the wheels are rolling.

Without talking about its lean-to-turn steering and the responsive back brakes, something that we have talked about with the previous product, the Beleev Adjustable Kick Scooter for Kids is all about letting kids ride with fun and safety, even when the sidewalks do not quite aid that.

What Is a Kid's Kick Scooter?

Kids like scooters, kids want scooters, kids need scooters. As fun as they are though, parents still usually worry about buying children scooters, bikes, cars, etc. But, when you choose the right model, these worries start going away.

These models will probably come featuring wide decks, accommodating both feet without making the kid feel uncomfortable. These models are not complete without non-slip grips, preventing little ones from hurting their little hands and keeping the grip soft and comfortable but also firm.

Kids grow up fast, so you want to choose a scooter that lets you adjust the handlebar's height, accommodating your growing child. You also want something that the kid will like, meaning models with bright, cool-looking paintworks and, sometimes, even LED lights, making the kid more noticeable riding the scooter. Apart from that, the paintwork should also be protecting the little vehicle against the elements, including rust and corrosion.

As long as these conditions are met, you can satisfy the kid and have the peace of mind knowing that your children are safe out there, scooting to their heart's content.

What Features to Compare

Recommended Age

There are considerable differences between scooters designed for particular age groups. When we're talking about scooters for kids between 2 and 5 years old, we're generally talking about scooters with 3 wheels and less deck clearance. When discussing scooters for kids above 5 years old, we're usually removing the 3rd wheel since kids around that age normally start figuring out the necessary balance for riding with 2 wheels. There are also models for kids below 2 years old, including a seat that lets toddlers ride without standing and balancing at all.

Construction

All vehicles are only as good as the materials they're constructed from. Where kids' kick scooters are concerned, these materials normally include aluminum bars and decks, making sure that the little vehicle does not start bending, deforming, or downright breaking within the first few months and falls. At the same time, though the aluminum here has to be pretty strong, it should also be lightweight since kids do not have the muscle mass to kick and drag 15+ pounds with them without exhausting themselves.

Wheels

Somewhat pertaining to the construction subject, wheels ought to be strong and durable too since parents seldom feel like replacing them in the first 3-6 months. Besides that, you also want them to be able to absorb mid-sized bumps and cushion the ride. Besides what's on the surface, the best wheels should have above-average bearings, making sure that the ride remains smooth even when the pavement gets bumpy and producing as little noise as possible.

Brakes

Kick scooters are not the fastest vehicles but they're still vehicles, letting kids gain considerable speeds, especially when going downhill. Following this logic, these scooters should be outfitted with decent brakes, responsive so that kids can initiate them without squeezing the triggers yet effective so that they can stop the kick vehicle without delay.

Weight and Max Load

As we have said earlier, kids' kick scooters need to be lightweight, meaning somewhere around 4-7 pounds depending on the intended age group and the model's construction. The maximum load that these scooters should be able to hold will depend on the intended age range too, usually hovering around 100 pounds when it comes to scooters for children 2-5 years old and above that when you start looking into older kids.

Extras

These can include multiple things, from LED lights around the wheels, deck, and stem to non-slip grips to height-adjustable 'bars, so while they're seldom as important (hence the "extras" part), we would not recommend overlooking them too because these small details can easily make and break scooters.

Why Your Kid Needs a Scooter

Scooters are not just toys. Sure, kids love playing with them, riding them anywhere and everywhere they can. But, besides entertainment value, scooters are offering multiple benefits, convincing most parents that the kid will also benefit from riding one. We will not list them all but here are the biggest benefits that kick scooters can provide for kids.

Hanging Out and Making New Friends

Kids cannot be sheltered, most parents know that and the ones that don't should learn that sooner rather than later, 'till the damage is already done. When kids have their own vehicles, they feel encouraged to travel, ride to the closest playground, spend time with friends, classmates, kids around their age. Plus, when multiple kids have scooters, they can compete with each other, which is usually good for them.

Increasing Confidence

Remember the last time you gave your kids responsible work and they felt all happy and excited? Kids are usually like that. Well, when you give them a scooter, they will have to behave responsibly too, learning how to drive and handle their own vehicle and how to avoid injuring themselves and others. When they learn that, you can see their confidence levels increasing. Also, with their own vehicle, you're giving them a semblance of independence, something that kids always appreciate.

Earning Mechanical Skills

Fixing everything yourself when your kid has some issues with the scooter can seem tempting since you're probably saving a considerable amount of time with this approach. However, you're also not letting them learn the ropes themselves. Understanding how different parts operate and interact with each other develops your kid's engineering skills. Doing so, the kid starts to figure out advanced customization as well as technical and mechanical functionality, something that will absolutely come in handy in the future.

Gaining Traffic Knowledge

Modern life is all about riding and driving different vehicles, from scooters, skateboards, and bicycles to motorcycles and cars. Sure, you should probably not let your kids ride their scooter on roads and highways just yet but maneuvring these restrictions will definitely let them understand the fundamental traffic rules that you were teaching earlier, which is also something that your little one will find useful later in life.

Promoting Body Functionality

Scooting, the little one will be strengthening metabolism, increasing blood circulation, boosting cardiopulmonary functions, and more. When kids ride scooters, they're also training their lower body and strengthening respiratory organs, preventing various respiratory diseases.

Moving More While Doing Less

Running's great, no one is saying otherwise. But scooting requires a little less effort than running, which is great too since that means that kids can see more things around them and visit more places, all while inputting less time and effort.

Working Out Balance and Direction

This is the most obvious part, hence the last spot on this list. Scooting, kids are developing fine motor skills, powering the vehicle with a kick but directing with balance.
