Olfa Rotary Cutter
As Many Layers as Necessary
Olfa Rotary Cutter Deluxe really delivers on that "deluxe" premise. With its 60mm rotary cutter blade, you'll be able to cut through 12 layers of cotton fabric without sacrificing control and accuracy in return. You'll be able to tackle fleece, wool, felt, suede, leather even bamboo shouldn't prove a challenge. Sure, with harder, denser materials, you'll have to apply a respectable amount of force but that is the case with any other cutter like that as well.
Aside from being particularly effective with heavy fabrics, what makes this model from Olfa deluxe is also how practical and safe it is. There's an easy-squeeze mechanism in the handle that extracts the blade and a nice little button that allows you to fix and hold it at a certain length.
The handle comes equipped with raised inserts, a small change but the one that makes a sizable difference on the control and comfort fronts. Moreover, the handle is a little curved to make sure you keep the wrist turns to a minimum.
Long story short, Olfa Rotary Cutter Deluxe is as suitable for industrial applications as it is for quilting enthusiasts. The company that introduced the rotary cutting tool to the world in the first place still finds ways to improve their products and what we have here is a good example of that. In fact, this is probably the best rotary cutter here. The model is about as functional and practical as they come. There isn't a fabric that it won't allow you to tackle.
Headley Tools Rotary Cutter
Tackle any Project
This model from Headley Tools makes a pretty convincing case with its versatile approach. More often than not, these rotary tools come with a single blade. Here, on the other hand, the manufacturers offer you six 45mm rotary cutter blades, a 45mm wave rotary blade, and a 45 mm skip rotary blade to boot.
As you would imagine, with so many different blades, you'll be able to handle nearly any project out there, from quilting and knitting to scrapbooking, sewing, and overall fabric cutting for different purposes. It is great for seamstresses, tailors, people involved in arts and crafts, the list goes on.
Sure, the blades wouldn't be worth much if the tool itself wasn't up to par as well. Fortunately, the model is about as good as they come. Every blade is comprised of SKS-7 steel, making them durable and pin-sharp.
When you release the trigger handle, the blade folds away, nice and safe. You set the safety locking button and the trigger handle is no longer usable until you press the aforementioned button again.
Plus, the model comes equipped with integrated grooves that have that anti-slip quality to them, reducing joint fatigue and making sure the tool stays in hand at all times.
In other words, what we have here is a much more versatile and all-around balanced option compared to every other product on this list. Many people with many different hobbies and professions will be able to find at least some use for it. Is it the best rotary cutter on the market today? Well, it is certainly up there.
Fiskars 01-005875
Like a Hot Knife Through Butter
This rotary cutter from Fiskars is really interesting. Though not much, the model is actually cheaper than every other tool on the list. Nevertheless, it might be the most effective and robust instrument here. The key is the titanium-coated 60mm rotary blade. With that titanium coating, the blade is 3 times harder than steel, giving you improved durability and overall lasting sharpness.
Among other things, the aforementioned blade makes it possible to cut thicker, denser materials, including but not limited to batting, foams, and, it probably goes without saying, multiple layers of different fabrics.
Now, we're not saying that the model is flawless. But, as far as we're concerned, the only issue here is that the safety button doesn't always respond when you press it too hard, which is a minor inconvenience at worst.
On the brighter side, the tool comes equipped with a sliding button that extends the blade during use and retracts it for nice, safe storage. And, as it is usually the case, the blade here can be assembled to either side of the cutter, so you're able to guarantee that optimal blade visibility regardless of your dominant hand.
All in all, there isn't a quilting job that the Fiskars rotary cutter will not be able to make easier. You'll be able to cut through different materials and many different fabrics like a hot knife through butter. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the model is particularly durable and should be able to last you a lifetime.
Olfa RTY-2/C
Keeping Things Simple
According to the people behind it, the most discerning characteristic of the Olfa RTY-2/C rotary cutter is the admittedly vibrant and lovely aqua handle color. Again, quoting the same people, it is supposed to be is as expressive as the individual using it.
Well, for our taste, the handle is nice and the color palette here is definitely unorthodox but we don't care too much about that. We do not add tools to our selections based on aesthetics alone. But since that is far from the only thing the model has going for it, we definitely couldn't overlook this one.
What we care more about is the contoured handle that allows for comfortable and convenient cutting at any angle. We also care about the integrated grooves around the aforementioned handle that basically prevent finger slippage, making the tool safer and more practical overall.
While on the subject of practicality, the model's weight is an interesting topic. In short, the tool is really lightweight, which is generally a good thing since it means less hand fatigue. On the other hand, less weight means that it can be a little harder to control at times, which isn't necessarily a plus in our book.
However, what is a plus in our book is a slide lock that lets you easily lock the blade onto the cutter. This way, you're able to quickly and easily start cutting after changing the blade.
Bottom line, we don't really have any major issues with Olfa RTY-2/C. The tool is available in 3 different but equally distinctive colors. It is equally convenient and comfortable for left- and right-handed users. It keeps things simple but practical and effective and that's how we like our rotary cutters.
Fiskars 195210-1001
Nice and Precise Cuts
With this cutter from Fiskars, it is about the blade first and foremost. Though the 45mm rotary blade isn't the biggest option on the market right now, its high-grade, precision-ground premium steel composition is absolutely nothing to scoff at.
With it, you will be able to cut paper, felt, and vinyl as well as through multiple layers of fabric. The model cuts curved edges and straight lines just about as well as any other rotary cutter prospect out there today.
However, despite its high-grade composition, the circular blade gets dull relatively quickly, so we would recommend a sharpening tool to go with the cutter since it is a lot cheaper than replacing the blades every time they get dull.
That being said, we wouldn't recommend replacing the handle (not that it is a thing). Featuring a curved shape and a comfort loop, the handle just feels right in your hand, nice and natural and it allows for additional comfort and control.
Other than that, it is the usual Fiskars rotary cutter deal, including the sliding button that lets you extract the blade, lock it into position, and retract the said blade for safe storage.
To make things simple, what we have here is a nice cutter from Fiskars that makes a pretty appealing case with its comfortable and well-thought-out design as well as its overall ergonomics and control. Considering the modest price tag, you can't go too wrong with this tool.
What Is a Rotary Cutter?
A rotary cutter (sometimes referred to as rotary scissors) is a tool that is neither old nor new. It's been around for quite some time, introduced 4 decades ago in 1979 for garment making. However, in a relatively short period of time, the tool was adopted by quilters. To this day, an instrument like that is mostly used by quilters to cut different fabrics. That being said, with a proper cutter, you will be able to work on different projects and cut various materials, from batting and foam to paper and vinyl. People involved in arts and crafts often use these tools for cutting all sorts of materials.
With every tool that incorporates a cutting element, you ought to look for safety mechanisms first and foremost. After that, make sure that the rolling blade is the right size for the tasks that you have in mind and its construction/structure is up to par. Other than that, it's the little things that, however, can make a ton of difference, including how comfortable the handle is and whether or not you're able to quickly and effortlessly extract and retract the blade.
Need something a little more heavy duty for some of the more demanding projects? Consider one of these wire cutters or plasma cutters.
