Bowflex SelectTech

Bringing Your Workout Routine to the Next Level

The Bowflex SelectTech is not something you could see at the local gym, but why is that? An improved design over the classic kettlebell includes a simple, yet convenient handle, but that’s not exactly it.

First of all, the thing that separates this model from the regular cast iron products is the ability to adjust the weight of the kettlebell. By adding or removing the weights included in the package, you can conveniently adjust the overall weight of the kettle according to your workout or fitness needs. This can easily be done using the built-in weight dial that makes tuning the required weight with a single turn.

Moving on, the high dense plastic body of the kettlebell makes it nice to the touch, which is a big plus in our book. This allows working out longer without feeling discomfort or using special workout gloves. The only thing that we’ve noticed is that it takes some time to get used to the unusual shape of the kettlebell. That said, in the long run, the benefits of using such an unconventional piece of fitness gear outweigh the couple of training sessions it takes to get accustomed to.

In the end, this Bowflex SelectTech adjustable weight model is among the best kettlebells around. Owing to the adjustable weight increments, it is suitable for people who want to get their bodies in shape and for users who exercise regularly.

GoFit Vinyl Dipped

A Classic Design

The GoFit PremiumKettle Bell is a classic one-piece sports gear made of solid cast iron and dipped with high-quality vinyl. Such bells are excellent for both home and gym workouts. Originally, these kettlebells have been designed particularly for fitness purposes; therefore, they are vibrantly colored in order to be eye-catching. As for the actual finish of the kettlebell, its coated, rubber-like texture enables easy and effortless gripping, so no powerlifting or gym gloves are required to effectively exercise with this kettlebell model. Likewise, the shape of the grip makes it easy to hold the bell from pretty much every angle, which makes it ideal for various exercises.

Furthermore, the weight of the kettlebell is your standard 15 lbs, so even a novice can start with this lighter bell and gradually shift to the bigger. The heavier models are optionally available in the range from 5, up to 60 lbs. Though, we do recommend adding weight step by step in order to not strain your muscles. As you progress in weightlifting, you can move to heavier kettlebells to reach your goal in strength training. Note that these CrossFit kettlebells can be used with other sports gear as well. And all in all, fans of a healthy lifestyle will find these bells to be excellent for the price.

AmazonBasics Cast Iron

An Essential Piece

When it comes to the basics there’s a lot of options available for fitness on the market. But which kettlebells are actually worth the price?

This cast iron kettlebell model from AmazonBasics is one of those fitness gear pieces that implement design simplicity, ease of use, and an affordable price tag in a single package. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the features that make it stand out.

Firstly, it’s the size and the shape of the bell. Made of cast iron it is fairly durable, yet the finish leaves something more to be desired. Secondly, the actual grip of the kettlebell, which is quite wide when compared to standard models, allows for using this particular piece for more advanced exercises with the bell.

In case 15 lbs just isn't enough for you, this model is optionally available in other sizes from 10 lbs to up to 70 lbs, so you can definitely find the one required for your workout routine. As for the shape of the bell itself, its bottom, front, and back sides are flat, which eliminates the risks of any wobbling. Likewise, there is a lower chance of the paint chipping off in case you accidentally drop the bell on a hard surface.

Being an essential piece of workout gear, this AmazonBasics model proves that a good kettlebell doesn’t always need to be overpriced. Well-balanced and comfortable to use, it will be your go-to pick for regular and advanced kettlebell exercises.

CAP Barbell Cast Iron

A Model for Both Basic and Complex Workouts

The CAP barbell is a cast iron kettlebell model that doesn’t introduce anything groundbreaking in terms of design, however, it is still a great piece of workout equipment, so let’s break down its features and find out why you need one.

While the 25 lbs version will be good for cardio exercises, the heavier models that are optionally available from the manufacturer will be excellent for pushups and similar types of workout exercises.

Likewise, the solid-cast design of the kettlebell makes it exceptionally durable, and thus a great option for working out with it long-term. Moreover, the simple and functional design allows for using this piece for various types of workouts like upper body, swings, minute kettlebell, clean and press, and even snatching.

The thing that we didn’t really appreciate, though, is the handle width that makes it a bit harder to wield for users with smaller palms. Although it is not something that can actually hinder your workout performance too much, it is important to keep that little quirk in mind.

All things considered, this kettlebell from CAP will be a decent option for workouts at home, especially if you are searching for a classic-style model that doesn’t fail. Easy to wield, hold, and exercise with, the CAP kettlebell is simple in design yet highly effective for achieving new workout milestones.

Yes4All Vinyl Coated

Easy to Use and Exercise With

The Yes4All kettlebell comes as a standard model with some interesting characteristics to it that may actually make it one of the best products for home use.

First of all, the vinyl coating of this solid-cast model makes it a perfect solution for workouts at home, owing to the capability of the vinyl to absorb all the unwanted vibrations, ultimately negating the risk of causing too much noise while exercising.

As for the drawbacks, this model has an uncharacteristically narrow bottom, which doesn’t make the kettlebell very useful for pushups. Even though it will take some time to get used to, you will still be able to perform them once the initial awkwardness goes away and so, it doesn’t make that huge of a difference compared to classic-style products.

Just like many other kettlebell products, this model is optionally available in different sizes and weight variants ranging from 5 lbs all the way up to 50 lbs so you can definitely find the ones that suit your workout requirements.

Wrapping things up, the Yes4All vinyl-coated kettlebell is designed for use at home. However, due to its soft padded coating, it will also come in handy at the gym. While resembling a classic-style product, this kettlebell is more versatile when it comes to the number of ways you can exercise with it.

What Is a Kettlebell?

Kettlebell is one of the most popular pieces of fitness gear. And that’s no wonder both men and women, amateur and professional athletes alike put this sports equipment among their favorites.

In most cases, a simple kettlebell looks like a balloon with a handle for a comfortable and firm grip. But that’s not all there is to it. Kettlebell lifting is great for harmonious body development. Beside developing musculature, regular workouts will quickly improve your respiratory and cardiovascular systems as well as stamina. As weight-lifting exercises spring all athlete’s body muscles into action, a home training with a kettlebell is worth a gym workout.

Conversely, the smaller pieces (such as 2.5 lbs or 5 lbs kettlebells) are good for pre-workout routines and general fitness exercises. So if you are looking for something to start with, we recommend those.

For eager sports enthusiasts that want to reach the peak of their physical capacity, it’s useful to consider dumbbells that can also be useful for your workouts. As for something simpler, we also recommend taking a look at the best resistance bands that will help you in enhancing your overall workout performance.

What Features to Compare

Type

The first thing you should consider before buying a kettlebell is its type. Although there are a lot of different variations to a standard kettlebell design, there are only a few main types of sports gear.

To start off, in terms of design, this sports equipment is divided into classical one-piece and adjustable kettlebells. Conversely, the weight of the one-piece kettlebells is fixed. As for adjustable kettlebells, their weight can be shifted by adding or taking away some plates that are usually called weight increments. These can vary depending on the purpose and design of given kettlebell model.

In terms of the materials, kettlebells can be classified according to the following criteria and materials

  • Cast iron bells. As some models of such bells are rubber-coated, they make less noise when placed on the floor. What's more, they don't scratch it. These weights are good for both gym and home use. Alternatively, you can always opt for vinyl-coated products that offer the same or an even higher level of protection to solid yet fragile cast-iron kettlebells.
  • Steel bells are considered to be the most reliable to use and to have the longest lifespan. Such masses are often covered with a rust-resistant coating which makes their appearance more stylish. This sports gear is manufactured mostly for gym workouts. Likewise, the steel products are generally more durable, compared to cast iron products, which makes them an ideal option for long-term use.
  • Plastic bells are usually made of a plastic body filled with sand, cement or metal chips, depending on the design of weight increments. This type of bell is an excellent option for home workouts. Sometimes these models feature a rubber coating that makes them safe for your floor.
  • Leather kettlebells filled with metal fragments are less injury-causing. They are often used for fitness or school sports classes.

Weight

The weight of such sports equipment is the next aspect worth paying attention to. In fact, kettlebell lifting is a great physical activity for jumpstarting your cardio and springing into action all the muscles throughout your body. If you are a novice weightlifter, we would recommend that you not overload your muscles and heart performing exercises with bells that are too heavy. Since your muscles may not be prepared for an advanced training load, it will be better to increase it little by little. When you already see that a certain weight doesn't have any impact on your body, it's high time to add more plates or shift to a heavier one-piece kettlebell.

Conveniences

Finally, look through the conveniences of a kettlebell’s maintenance. Note that the coating of a bell’s handle should be reliable so it doesn't slip out of your hands. Thus, you’d better go with a bell that has a powder-coated handle. To add to it, take into consideration that some kettlebell models feature a vinyl shell. Due to these shells, the bells are going to be easier and safer on your floor. Moreover, they will prevent wear and tear of this sports equipment.

Did you know?

When lifting barbells causes discomfort and deadlifting is more likely to cause pain, maybe these exercises are not for you. Kettlebell swings and pushups, on the other hand, offer a more flexible approach to the workout routine.

Do’s and Don’ts of Exercising With a Kettlebell

Keep your feet firm - the most common mistake that almost all athletes have done at least once in their lifetime is improper balance while performing various bell exercises including kettlebell swings. To get the most from the exercise and to avoid potential trauma you should always keep your feet firm.

Make sure that your back is flat - keeping your back as flat as possible is essential for kettlebell exercises. Conversely, you endanger your back if you don't maintain proper form. Likewise, if you intend on doing swings but have some issues with hunching or leaning it is recommended to switch to lighter weights. Doing wall touches with your back will warm up your body and back muscles, so don’t forget to do these simple exercises before starting your workout.

Advanced Techniques and How to Increase Grip Strength

Once basic exercises are out of the way, it is never a bad idea to spice up your workout routine.

  • Doing deadlifts with the kettlebell - performing deadlifts will help you in becoming more comfortable and familiar with this type of sports gear. Try bending down with your back instead of reaching the bell with your arms, bend your knees and flex the hips to gradually lower your body down. Once the handle is reached pull yourself forwards a little bit and reverse the motion by pushing your hips forward, then proceed to lower the bell down. As you lower it down move from the hips once again (the trick is to not simply bend but to push firmly with your feet to keep your stance stable). The goal of this exercise is to keep a continuous motion by raising the kettlebell up and lowering it down in a smooth fashion.
  • Trying out pinches with weight plates - this exercise will be a good starting point for developing better grip strength. For starters, use 2 weight plates that are not heavier than 2.5 pounds each. Place them on top of one another and lift them up on the edge that is rounded. After that, take your hand and place it on top of the plates to pinch 2 plates together, lift them up and hold them in front of you or at your sides. Perform this exercise for at least 30 seconds. For best results, it is recommended to use low-weight weight plates first, and then gradually increase the load by lifting heavier ones as you feel more comfortable performing the sets.
  • Performing Farmer’s Carries - for this exercise you will need 2 kettlebells. First, stand up with the weights in each hand, gripping them tightly with your fingers. After that, walk 20 feet to the front while carrying the weight in your hands. After several sets, you can try increasing the distance to 40 feet. Dumbbells would be good for this exercise too, so don’t hesitate to use them when you need to develop better grip strength.
  • Performing bottom up with a classic-style kettlebell - this exercise will require a bit more practice than others. First of all, stand with your feet hip-distance apart. Next, hold the kettlebell in one hand and with the heavy part of the bell upwards. Then, raise the elbow to the shoulder and hold the kettlebell for a few seconds. Note that your upper arm must be approximately 90 degrees from your torso with your forearm bending upwards 90 degrees from the upper part of your arm. As for the distance, the bell should be about as far away from your face as your forearms’ length. Once that is done, lift the kettlebell above your head and hold it for 1-2 seconds at a time.
