The Best of the Best
The Segway Ninebot MAX Electric Kick Scooter is currently one of the beefiest and most powerful models available for sale, so it can become an excellent option for those who need the world-class scooter and don't mind paying premium for that.
What definitely sets this scooter above the competition is the ultra-long travel range. The manufacturer states that it can ride up to 40.4 miles on a single charge. But as with all scooters, that's the maximum range for ideal, flat terrain and low speed. On average, the Ninebot MAX travels for about 30 miles, which is still much more than mid-class models offer.
The speed also largely depends on your weight, the terrain you're riding on, and some other environmental factors. At its fastest, the scooter can get up to 18.6 mph, and that speed begins to reduce only when the battery drops below 50% (drops to about 16 mph). On impressively steep hills, you'll be able to maintain 6 to 7 mph. Speaking of which, this scooter can climb hills with grades up to 20˚.
All these impressive specs are largely achieved owing to the upgraded motor that outputs 350 Watts nominal and 700 Watts peak. What's more, owing to the Smart Battery Management System, there will be no risk of a short circuit, discharging, overcurrent, and temperature drops.
Premium Construction
The other improvements include an IP7 water resistance rating of core parts and newly upgraded 10-inch pneumatic wheels with self-healing tires. The large wheels are able to withstand multiple punctures without deflation for better safety on the road. The wheels are pneumatic, so the Segway Ninebot Max absorbs most of the bumps easily, even despite the fact that is doesn’t feature a suspension setup. Also, it's worth noting that the front wheel has a mechanical drum brake, while the back one is fitted with a regenerative electric brake. This simultaneous dual-brake system ensures great stability and steerability.
When it comes to the standing platform, it has a grippy rubber surface and offers 20 x 7 inches of usable deck space. This makes it roomy enough for two people to stand on. Overall, the scooter supports up to 220 lbs. The only slight tradeoff for that is a bit heavy weight (42 lbs). Therefore, the manufacturer says that riders should be at least 14 years old so that they won't have trouble carrying it around.
Overall, the build quality of the Segway Ninebot MAX is excellent. It's very substantial and feels like a solid commuting machine, especially when compared to "budget" class scooters. It can stand up to the longest of rides and can climb up the steepest of hills.

Intelligent Design
Xiaomi has always been associated with smartphones primarily, but the M365 scooter has changed that all. It has made Xiaomi an equally big name in the industry of electric scooters. Owing to its forward-thinking design and smart capabilities, it has won the Red Dot "Best of the Best" Award and the iF Design Award 2017. And for us, the Mi Electric Scooter is also an obvious winner in terms of intelligence, quality, and price. For around $400, it's surely the best bang for the buck.
To begin with, this scooter has 3 variable riding modes. By default, it's set to Eco mode that tops out at 10mph, but you can easily switch to Drive Mode or Sports Mode. These let you reach 12 mph and 15.5 mph, respectively. Considering that the scooter comes fitted with 8.5" wheels, we believe that the top speed of 15.5 mph is great. However, if you need to extend the battery range, we recommend using the Eco mode that allows you to travel up to 18.6 miles on a single charge.
That being said, in all modes, the scooter may struggle climbing hills and riding off-road. Nevertheless, it works fine on small grades and low- to medium drop curbs. And no matter the terrain, you'll always maintain control of the scooter owing to the double braking system (disc braking and EABS regenerative braking).
Portable Option
It arrives mostly assembled and ready to go right out-of-the-box. Actually, all you need to get going is to attach the wheel with 4 screws (included in the set).
Made of aerospace-grade aluminum, the Mi electric scooter is very strong yet lightweight. And its ability to be folded in half makes it great for carry-ons, maneuvering stairs, and more. That also means you won't need to plan in advance how you're going to get home - you can fit the scooter under a restaurant table when hanging with your colleagues on Friday night, for example, and then put it in the trunk of the Uber car.
If you still decide to ride home in the dark on your own, the ultra-bright 1.1W headlights will make you well-visible within a range of up to 20 feet. Red taillights will also flash distinctly when braking, making night riding even safer.
With all the outstanding features, the Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter is surely one of the best performers on the market in almost every meaningful way. It’s super convenient, smart, and fun.

Great Entry-level Model
If you don't need a serious commuter but just a good scooter that will give you or your teenage child a thrill to ride, the Razor E300 may hit the spot. Available at less than $250, it's a fairly budget-friendly model that can become a great introduction to the world of e-scooting both for adults and for teenagers. With a nice matte-gray design, extra-large deck, and 220-lb bearing capacity, it easily accommodates users of most heights and weights.
To begin with, the Razor E300 is equipped with a 250-Watt, high-torque, single-speed motor that offers a maximum speed of up to 15 mph, which is quite impressive for entry-levels scooters. Moreover, the motor pulls reasonably well and doesn't bog down even with a serious incline. As for the range, it's advertised to go for 40 minutes on a single charge, which equates to around 9-10 miles. Yet, some users note that they manage to ride for almost an hour, at full throttle. That should be enough for almost any leisure activity you're planning.
Other than that, it's a pretty basic electric scooter. It doesn't have a lot of frills and lacks a display, hence you can't track your current speed and battery life. The included functions are pretty limited, including only a set of drive controls, brake, accelerator, wheels, a platform, and an electric motor mounted at the rear of the deck. The motor drives the rear wheel with a simple chain and reduction gear, however, its torque is always strong and immediate.
Easy Assembly
The Razor E300 is simple not only in design but in assembly as well. The manufacturer says that the whole process won't take you longer than 10 minutes, and we would definitely agree with that. All you have to do is just slide the handlebar post into the hollow post (above the front wheel) and tighten the clamp so as to secure the handlebar in place. You can do that with a hex wrench which is thoughtfully supplied with the e-scooter.
Once assembled, the E300 looks quite substantial and professional with a super-sized deck and fat pneumatic tires supporting it. The big tires make for a comfortable, stable ride over rough terrain, while a hand-operated brake ensures safe stops. As an extra safety precaution, the power to the motor will be automatically cut when the brake is activated.
All things considered, the Razor E300 is definitely not a toy but a "chunky" electric scooter that is built really well and delivers a good amount of riding range. It has no bells and whistles and offers one speed only, but for beginners, it's a great value model.

For Commuters
The GoTrax Xr is another well-priced e-scooter that was created specifically for commuters. With its light weight of 26 lbs, it's ideal not only for riding but also for carrying up a flight of stairs or for use in public transport as a last-mile solution, for example. So, if the nearest public stop isn't accessible to your starting or ending destination, this model can solve the problem. The unit is also small enough to fit into a trunk of any car. It measures just 15” x 44” x 6” when folded down, and an additional safety pin will reliably keep it locked during transportation.
Powered by the improved 300-Watt motor and LG battery, the XR is able to reach a top speed of 15.5 mph on a flat surface. On relatively smooth roads, the XR really delivers an enjoyable ride - the air-filled tires absorb minor bumps. Just like the tires, soft handlebars and a sturdy frame contribute to a comfortable and enjoyable ride. However, if you need to conquer steep slopes, you may need to consider a bit more powerful scooter.
On the upside, this folding scooter has a quite solid braking system that is very responsive. The EABS along with the disc brake will make you stop in seconds, making you feel safer and more confident on the road. In addition, the front electronic brake will regenerate the battery with every stop to maximize your range.
Straighforward to Use
The Gotrax XR Ultra Foldable Electric Scooter arrives fully charged and requires minimal assembly. All you need to do is mount the brake using the hexagon key that comes in the box. The package also includes easy-to-understand pictures and clear instructions.
Speaking about the overall design, the XR e-scooter has an IP54 rating meaning it can tolerate some splashes and rain (not submersion). So, bad weather or muddy trails shouldn't stop you from riding the XR. And if you're going to use it in the dark, you'll benefit from a bright LED headlight and a rear reflector on the fender.
Lastly, we would like to say that this model has a straightforward cockpit that will be ideal for beginners. The controls are ultimately simple with a thumb-operated accelerator, bell, and brake lever. Also, there is a throttle allowing you to activate cruise control. The core element of the cockpit is an informative LED display that shows your current speed and battery life in a simple layout.
To recap, the XR is quite impressive for its price. Costing under $300, it's speedy and functional. Made with commuters in mind, it's also very light yet sturdy - you'll be able to pick it up easily with one hand.

Solidly-Built and Smart
The Hiboy S2 Electric Scooter is a sturdy mid-range product that has quite a lot of novelty features to make your riding experience as enjoyable as possible. To begin with, it has thick and textured handlebar grips and a solid brake lever without any play or excess friction. Yet, the biggest adornment on the handlebar is the dashboard screen that looks very high-tech and shows such useful data as current speed, remaining power, and mode. Alternatively, you can check all the information via your smartphone. The proprietary Hiboy app pairs with Android and iOS phones to show you the battery level, current firmware, and other stats. Also, it allows for speed and cruise control, turning the lights on/off, as well as locking the scooter. The latter feature will be particularly useful if you're going to leave your scooter for a while in a high-theft area.
Turning back to the design peculiarities, we would like to point out that the scooter comes equipped with 8.5" solid rubber tires. This means that you'll never need to worry about puncturing and dealing with flats. However, that also means that you may struggle on extremely bumpy or uneven surfaces since the solid tires won't be able to absorb road vibrations like inflatable ones. Though, the Rear Shock Absorber system can make things better. Depending on your needs, the shock absorbers can be tightened or loosened with a hex wrench.
Regenerates as You Ride
When it comes to rideability, the Hiboy S2 can meet most urban needs. Made with a 350-Watt brushless motor, it reaches a speed of 18.6 mp/h and goes for up to 17 miles. But, owing to the Regenerative braking, the range can be extended a bit - whenever you’re riding this e-scooter in a downhill road, it'll charge itself automatically. For downhill riding, the scooter is also equipped with two high-performance 110-mm disc brakes and eABS technology. This way, the wheels won’t lock during a sudden brake and you won't injure yourself.
For longer rides, you may want to install a seat and the Hiboy S2 allows for that. It's compatible with the Hiboy padded seat that is height- and tilt-adjustable. This makes the Hiboy S2 scooter ideal for seniors and those who struggle to stand for long periods of time. Also, the model is one of the safest offerings for night riders, since it has plenty of lights on it (a front bright headlight, red lights under the deck, and red brake lights at the rear).

What Is an Electric Scooter?
An electric scooter, also called an e-scooter, looks pretty similar to a two-simple wheeled manual scooter with one "but" - it's propelled by a motor and, therefore, falls into the ‘powered transport’ category. Just like a simple scooter, it's popular among all ages, and it's quite common to see office workers riding their e-scooters to work and back home. That's because these motor vehicles are much more energy-efficient and affordable than cars. Also, they’re considered to be a lot safer and quicker since they can save a lot of time in busy cities. They're compact enough to access almost anywhere, so you shouldn't have trouble when taking a cut through the subway or a shopping mall. In a word, a motorized scooter can save much time otherwise spent in heavy traffic. Because of their portable design, they can also be parked in tight spaces or even put under the desk in an office.
Another definite advantage is that electric scooters run on batteries, meaning you don't need to depend upon fuel. So, they can not only save you some money in the long run but also make a good contribution to the environment and reduce air pollution.
Besides all those benefits, electric scooters can bring so much fun to kids. Every child dreams of a push cycle, and if it comes with an engine, the joy knows no bounds. But since too many companies manufacture different e-scooters, we've selected only the best models for any need.
If you or your growing kids are fans of active leisure, you might also want to consider reading our reviews of longboards and skateboards.
What Features to Compare
Riding Qualities
There are a variety of scooters, and it's very important to decide on parameters that are important for you. First of all, you should clarify the riding qualities. You need to pay attention to the distance or time a scooter is able to run before it needs recharging. This parameter is directly influenced by its battery type and capacity. The scooter speed should be chosen with the age of your child in mind. The models that reach the speed of up to 10 - 12 mph are more appropriate for children up to 10 years old, while the models up to 15 mph are appropriate for kids from 10 to 13 years old. Before picking the model with a high speed, learn your child’s abilities, since riding a high-speed scooter requires good reaction and balance. The diameter of the wheels is vital for the passing ability of a scooter on various terrains. The maximum load will allow you to choose the model proper for your tad.
Design
Design is the next point worth paying your attention to, as it influences the quality of a scooter. The shock absorbers of wheels will ensure smooth riding over rough terrains and improve usability. The braking system plays an important role in steering, so you should pay close attention to it, too. The disc brakes provide a good slowdown and withstand high loads. In addition, the disc brakes are easy to replace, and they are usually installed on powerful high-speed models. The drum brakes are also effective, yet their maintenance is quite difficult and requires specific skills. The V-brakes are less effective, however, simple to replace and maintain, and are commonly installed on low-speed models, where they perform their functions brilliantly. Furthermore, you have to consider the type of wheel drive. The models with chain drives and belt drives are the most common nowadays. The operating principle of those drives is based on a transfer of rotary force from an engine to wheel through the chain or belt. The chain gear is considered more reliable, yet it is noisier when in use. A belt drive in its turn is considered more affordable and noiseless; however, the belt may slip when the load is too high.
Usability
Pay attention to technology and accessories that boost usability. An adjustable handlebar will let you customize its height for your child to use a scooter for several years. The supplementary accessories such as a headlight, an under-seat storage compartment, sidelights, and a saddlebag will facilitate the use and improve safety. The easy engine start will be a beneficial feature for anyone. Low weight and foldable design will allow easy transportation and comfortable storage in confined places.
