SCIENTIFIC APPROACH
Dragonology is a book about dragons written by the 19th-century fictional author Dr. Ernest Drake, said to be a member of the Secret and Ancient Society of Dragonologists. The book is set in an alternative universe where dragons do exist but are close to extinct due to the humans' actions. From it, your kid will learn some historical and biological data on dragons as well as ways to find these creatures and tame them; there is also a dragon runic alphabet in the book. It is not unlike an encyclopedia.
This Dragonology book was translated into 32 languages and sold more than 5.7 million copies, it will be interesting not only for children, the parents will also have a lot of fun reading it.
BEAUTY IN THE DETAILS
Successful publishers know that to sell a book, one needs not only a good plot but also an eye-catching design. It goes for any book but for children books even more so. Dragonology: The Complete Book of Dragons, in addition to the highly detailed beautiful illustrations, has a whole range of bonuses like samples of dragon skin, wings, scales, for example, or hidden letters from Merlin, Marco Polo, Saint George. You and your child will learn to track dragons, grow them from eggs, feed the little ones. The most dedicated dragonology students will learn the dragon alphabet and read the runic spell to summon a real dragon!
The one who masters this book will become a true dragon tamer! That is, if they survive...
WHO IT IS FOR
This book about dragons is generally approved for kids from 8 to 12 years, it has a grade level 3–7 and the necessary Lexile measure is claimed to be 1220L. However, there are customers who bought this book for much younger kids, they just needed to explain some parts to them but otherwise, the youngsters enjoyed Dragonology: The Complete Book of Dragons.
If you like this book about dragons, you might later consider buying the whole series including Wizardology: The Book of the Secrets of Merlin, and Monsterology: The Complete Book of Monstrous Beasts. This will be the treasured magic books collection for your family.
POSSIBLE MOVIE
The popularity of this Dragonology book was so great that the famous Universal Studios acquired the rights to the movie production in August 2012. Rumors say the plot will revolve around a villain whose intention is to bend all the dragons to submission and destroy the humankind. To fight him, a group of brave dragonologists goes off on a dangerous journey.

A BEAUTIFUL SET BY THE TALENTED AUTHOR
Tui T. Sutherland is a children's books author and Wings of Fire is one of her most famous works. This set includes five out of the ten dragon books in the series, all of them well-written and highly engaging for kids. The main plot revolves around five dragonets, dragon teenagers, so to speak, who were brought up by the Talons of Peace with the sole purpose of fulfilling a certain prophecy and stopping the dragon war. But when the dragonets meet the world, they are not sure they want whatever the destiny prepared for them. Same as human teenagers, they want freedom more than anything. Can the two goals overlap?
Officially, the story has the grade level of 3–7 and is intended for 8 to 12 years old kids but many teenagers find the young dragons adventures fascinating.
A BOOK COLLECTION
The good thing about any bulk purchase of a series is usually that the books are designed in the same style, often by the same illustrator. Here, each novel has a different dragon on the cover, the one who will be the protagonist, and a different background, but all of them are indeed in the same style. What is also notable, in our opinion, is that the dragons look much more realistic than in many other dragon stories books; their faces are not too human-like, their facial expressions are limited. These dragons are animals, necessarily, even if highly intelligent ones. Please note that these are not books with many pictures but novels. There are drawings of dragon species inside (drawn without shades and with clear lines kids can imitate) but that's it.
HARDCOVER VS PAPERBACK
Almost all books today are printed in both hardcover and paperback versions, this series is, of course, the same. The sad part here is that the hardcover set is almost five times as expensive as the paperback one. In our opinion, this is a great choice for a Birthday or some other holiday gift as hardcovers always look much more 'presentable'. Paperbacks are the practical decision, they are cheaper and lighter, too, your kid will be able to carry the books around and read dragon stories when they have time. For example during a school field trip in the bus.
SOME RANDOM FACTS
- The first five dragon books are to be read in the following order:
- The Dragonet Prophecy
- The Lost Heir
- The Hidden Kingdom
- The Dark Secret
- The Brightest Night - The hero of the first book is Clay, a MudWing dragonet.
- Clay is the only dragonet not pictured in his natural habitat on the cover.
- Between the event of The Dragonet Prophecy and The Dark Secret, only a month passed.
- Besides the main dragonet, on the covers, you can find other tiny dragons drawn that might be other dragonets.
- The Dragonet Prophecy has a 4.41 rating on GoodReads (as of the day this review is written).

A FUN BOOK FOR THE SMALLEST OF THE FAMILY
Dragons Love Tacos is not really a serious study on dragons. This children dragon stories book boasts unusual plot and narration that adults might find somewhat primitive but children will just adore for it is infinitely funny. There is a reason for it to be called a bestselling phenomenon by The New York Times, you'll have a lot of fun with your kid and will make them love reading.
Grade level for these dragon stories is from preschool to grade two and the recommended age is 3 to 7 years old.
A CHARMING DRAGON BOOK FOR KIDS
This children dragon stories book features a whole range of images that will make your little one giggle. The pictures are not very realistic but this is made for the sake of story as it is not exactly sensible in any way. Instead, it is kind and funny, just what little kids will enjoy. The dragons look at your kid from the pages with almost human emotions for your child to feel closer to them. This combination of appealing picture and simple story with lots of humor will charm its way into your and your kid's heart immediately.
READ AND LISTEN
Dragons Love Tacos is offered in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, and AudioCD format. The latter is not exactly unusual in the modern times yet not every dragon stories book can be found in it. This way, you can not only read your kid a story but playback it narrated by a professional. It's a good way to teach children to read, by the way.
For this book about dragons, the difference in price between the printed versions is not very big. We'd say that the hardcover option is better for those whose kids like to carry their favorite things around with them at all times—hardcovers are more sturdy overall. By the way, we'd like to point out that the book itself is rather big, 10" wide and 10" tall, roughly.
AN OPTION FOR CHALLENGED KIDS
At the end of 2014, the talks started on the topic of releasing Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin in Braille for kids who have problems seeing. Those who buy these dragon stories books will have the kid's name printed in Braille on a special page. In the first few months the project existed, there were several children's book series created, with all copies contributed to the Anchor Center for Blind Children in Denver, CO.

YOU KNOW THESE HEROES
You've probably watched this movie with your children like a thousand times, Dreamworks's How to Train Your Dragon was a huge success all over the world. But few actually know that it is a book-based animated movie. Cressida Cowell published How to Train Your Dragon is 2003. The story is told by old Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and it is the story about him when he was a kid starting his journey to being the Tribe leader. Note that this dragon stories book is quite different in plot compared to the movie! However, in our opinion, this is not really bad. Your kid will just have more stories about their favorite characters. After all, according to the author herself, the film remained "true to the spirit and message of the book."
The whole series is targeted at children of 8 to 11 years old and have a grade level 3–7, although older kids also seem to enjoy the adventures of Hiccup and his friends quite a lot. These dragon stories have fairly high ratings at reading portals like Goodreads.
WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED BY THE SAME PERSON
Cressida Cowell is a true fan of her job, she not only writes books but illustrates some of them as well, including this one. The pictures here are intentionally childlike, naïve or even primitive, with little to no realism. This style allows the child to relate to the story better, kids often smile at the images in this How to Train Your Dragon book. Well, adults do too (we certainly did) as it feels a little bit nostalgic and extremely touching.
Cowell is a very dedicated author. By the time the DreamWorks started working on the first movie, she had only written two dragon stories books in the series but by the time the film came to the cinemas, there were already eight of them, popular among children of all ages and adults alike thanks to the intricate adventures with quite a lot of humor and sometimes a little bit of sadness and tragedy.
GREAT SELECTION
As of today, the series includes twelve dragon books and several related works. We are certain that after reading the first one your kid will ask for all of them. Here is the main story list:
- How to Train Your Dragon
- How to Be A Pirate
- How to Speak Dragonese
- How to Cheat A Dragon's Curse
- How to Twist A Dragon's Tale
- A Hero's Guide to Deadly Dragons
- How to Ride A Dragon's Storm
- How to Break A Dragon's Heart
- How to Steal A Dragon's Sword
- How to Seize A Dragon's Jewel
- How to Betray A Dragon's Hero
- How to Fight a Dragon's Fury
The dragon stories book is also offered in the widest possible range of formats. You can get a hardcover or a paperback to read sitting at your desk with a bookstand or lying in bed, a Kindle version if you prefer a whole library in your pocket, or an audiobook/Audio CD to listen to instead or straining your eyes.
WHEN WILL WE SEE THE THIRD MOVIE?
The date for the third movie release was pushed and pushed and pushed. From the original statement promising us 2016 release to 2017, 2018... The latest news is that, due to a corporate restructuring after NBCUniversal purchased DreamWorks, we now have to wait till March 1, 2019. It is also stated that the third movie might be the last one in the franchise. We'll see.

CHILDREN'S FAIRY WORLD

What are the Dragon Stories
Dragons. Fantastic creatures from fairy tales, as controversial as they come. From hungry evil beasts that stole people's treasures and kidnapped maidens to the wisest and kindest of beings, who helped knights fight for goodness. We've known them from so many different sides and still, they never cease to amaze us. From The Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter, the stories about magic, friendship, love, and adventures involving dragons capture everyone, young and old. The hype over dragon stories has hit humanity in XIX century and it continues to grow thanks to the popular culture. The number of movies, games, and, of course, books where heroes meet dragons, good and bad, is enormous and is still rising thanks to the neverending interest in these marvelous things. Sooner or later, most parents start to look for dragon stories to tell their kids or kids themselves look up dragon books over the net. We're here to offer you five children dragon stories remarkable in one way or another. These will entertain your kids and enrich their world, widen it to fit a grand creature the dragon is.
Leaving your kid to read before going to sleep, take the time to prepare proper lighting to save their eyesight. A desk or a floor lamp is a must in a study. Or you can opt for an e-Reader instead of printed books, these devices are equipped with backlit screens that also often feature filters for lessening eye strain (and ebooks are generally cheaper).
What Features to Compare
Age and Grade Level
Generally, these parameters are overlapping but if your kid is ahead or behind their grade or age group in preferable books you will need to look at these parameters separately. Where the age the book is created for means more or less the plot difficulty and vividness/maturity, the grade level is more about how long the sentences and paragraphs are, how hard the words the author uses are. It might also help to read brief reviews of the books before buying to understand how true the creator's designated parameters are and to decide if the book is really good and interesting for your little one.
Is It a Series? What Kind?
Check if your chosen book about dragons is a part of a series, you will probably want to start from the first one if it is, right? There are separate purchase options and bundles, of course. Sometimes the parts of the series line up in a single smooth story and sometimes it doesn't matter what part you start with, they may be separate stories set is the same world, for example. Dragons usually mean fantasy but fantasy can mean a novel, or a myth collection, or even a dragonology encyclopedia with "scientific" facts about dragons. It's all up to you knowing the tastes of your kid.
Visual
How the book looks is important for a child, sometimes more so than what the book is about. The beautiful cover and illustrations will catch the eye of a young reader long before he or she focuses on contents.
There are all types of books now, from printed to electronic but we'd say children's books are to stand on the shelves for the kid to take them, open them, smell the pages, feel the world. It's just so much better this way! And when it comes to printed books, there are hardcovers and paperbacks. The former live longer and look more expensive but they are, well, more expensive. Paperbacks are cheaper, sometimes significantly so but your little one will need to execute care while handling them.
FAQ:
Q: My kid already reads more complicated stories than those of his/her grade. Can I buy him/her dragon stories for older kids?
A: First of all, congratulation on having an avid reader for a kid! It’s always nice. And as for your question, although the grade levels are mainly created to indicate the difficulty of a text in terms of more or less technical parameters (like the complexity of words, the length of sentences and paragraphs and chapters) they can also be a beacon for the plot maturity. What we’re trying to say is, books for older children might have mature content like blood and gore, for example. If your kid can deal with it, there is no reason not to buy dragon books for older kids. Just check the reviews and overall warnings beforehand.
Q: I need a gift for a kid I don’t know all that well, just the age and that he/she loves dragons. What book is the best?
A: You can go with age the book is recommended for but if the kid really loves dragon stories you’d better check with the parents or friends what books he/she already has, especially when it comes to novels. There are short dragon stories and series of many books, maybe your recipient lacks some in his favorite collection. And a dragonology encyclopedia is a nice option for a dragon lover too, even more so if it’s a gift—they are usually very beautifully designed.
Q: Are dragon stories really healthy for a kid? Maybe something real would be better?
A: Books that are correctly chosen according to the kid’s reader level and overall maturity can’t really be unhealthy, children dragon stories and books about magic included. A book about dragons, creatures not existing in real life, helps kids develop imagination, awakens their craving for exploration of the world, entertains and teaches. The story doesn’t need to be about the real world to teach real lessons. In fact, adventures in imaginary worlds can be more subtle in their lessons and some kids are more willing to learn from subtle things.
Q: Aren’t dragons cruel and scary? Should little children really read about them?
A: There are all kinds of dragon stories out there, in many of them dragons are children’s best friends and not villains. There are funny unrealistic stories, kind stories, stories about friendship and loyalty. The range includes dragon books for virtually any age.
